"Mommyyy," I called out, dragging the word as I leaned against her doorframe.

"What, girl?" She didn't even look up from her show.

"Can I go to this party tonight?" I'd already asked Trey, and he said yeah, but when it comes to my momma it's—better safe than sorry.

"Who you going with?" she asked, cutting her eyes at me.

"The twins," I said, trying to sound casual. Like she don't already know the answer to that.

She smacked her lips. "Y'all got y'all own bottle, right? Don't be going drinking off these raggedy niggas."

"We do,".

"Mmmhmm," she hummed, clearly not buying it but not pressing either. "Trey know you going?"

"Yes, ma'am," I said, giving her my best innocent smile.

She squinted like she could see right through me, but then she waved her hand. "Alright, go head. But don't have me up all night wondering where you at."

Finally. I dipped before she could change her mind.

I don't know why niggas insist on standing at the door at these parties, but here we are—me, Kay Kay aka Kayla and Kiki aka Kiera stuck waiting for the traffic jam to clear.

"This shit already too packed," Kay Kay said, looking around like she was one bad vibe away from dipping.

"You saying that like we wasn't tryna be the first ones here," I teased, tugging her arm to pull her closer to the entrance.

Kiki rolled her eyes. "Y'all love to argue over stupid shit. We here now, so let's move."

We finally squeezed through the door, and the smell of weed and sweat hit me like a slap. I held my breath and pushed deeper into the crowd, spotting a few familiar faces along the way.

"Yo, Mari!" some dude yelled from the corner, holding up a red cup. I waved but didn't stop. He's cool and all, but I ain't wanna talk.

Instead, we found a spot near the wall where we could post up for a minute. Kay Kay was already scouting the room.

"Who invited all these niggas from across the river? They don't even go to our school," she said, side-eyeing a group of boys.

"Girl, who cares? Just vibe," Kiki said, already pulling out her phone to take pictures.
