I was at Nalani's house, helping her decorate her room for Christmas. Typical Nalani pink and gold everywhere.
Her room already looked like some bougie Instagram setup, but the Christmas vibe? It took it to another level.
She was fluffing the Christmas tree while talking about everything that had been going on lately. We hadn't had a real one-on-one in a minute, and I could tell she needed to get some things off her chest.
"...Then I ended up at Amare's house," she said, barely audible, like she hoped I wouldn't catch it.
I turned to her so fast I almost knocked over the ornament box. "Wait, hold the fuck up. You what?"
"It was all in the moment," she said, brushing me off like it was nothing.
"Nalani, what did y'all do?"
"The first or second time?" she said, not even blinking.
I stopped what I was doing and just stared at her. "What the hell do you mean which time? There was more than one?"
"Mhm."
"Alright, let's go with the second time, since apparently this is a regular thing now."
"Well..." she trailed off, pretending to focus on the tree. "I was there for like two days."
"And?" I raised my eyebrow, waiting for the rest.
"All we did was fuck, for real."
I let out a frustrated sigh and shook my head. "Nalani, why do you keep letting her play with your emotions? You know this isn't good for you."
She just shrugged, like I wasn't making sense.
"Do you miss her?" I asked, studying her face.
"No," she said, but the way her voice cracked said otherwise.
"You sure?"
"I don't know," she admitted, biting her lip.
"You miss her," I said, no point in sugarcoating it. "And that's fine. But you need to either figure it out with her or let that girl go. All this back-and-forth shit is gonna leave you stuck in the same cycle."
She didn't say anything, just nodded a little, but I knew my words were hitting her.
I decided to change the subject. "So... what's up with the tree? You got more decorations, or is this it?"
"Oh, there's another box," she said, pointing to the corner.
Of course, there was another box.
By the time we were done, her tree was looking fire. I had to admit the pink and gold theme was a vibe, even if it was extra as hell.
We flopped onto her bed, admiring our work. I grabbed one of her pillows, hugging it while she stared up at the ceiling like she was lost in thought.
"What's up?" I asked.
She shook her head. "Nothing, just... tired."
I didn't push it. If Nalani wanted to talk, she would.
After a minute of silence, she turned to me. "How's you and Kayson?"
I smiled immediately. "We're good. Like, really good. He makes me so happy, Lani."
She sat up a little, her face softening. "You really love him, huh?"
"I do," I admitted, my voice quieter now. "He just... gets me, you know? Like, I don't have to explain myself or pretend to be something I'm not. He makes me feel safe."
Nalani smiled, the genuine kind I hadn't seen from her in a while. "I'm happy for you, Ki. You deserve that."
"Thanks," I said, nudging her with my shoulder. "You'll get there, too. Maybe not with Amare, but somebody's out there for you. Someone who's gonna treat you the way you deserve."
She didn't say anything, but I could tell my words stuck with her.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, and we both looked over at it.
"Amare again?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
She nodded but didn't make a move to pick it up.
"You gonna answer?"
She hesitated, then shook her head and let it buzz until it stopped. "Not tonight."
"Good," I said, smirking. "You need to focus on you for a minute. Let Amare wait for once."
Nalani leaned back against the headboard with a sigh. "Yeah. You're right."
For the rest of the night, we just sat there, talking and laughing about dumb shit, like the old days. And for once, it felt like Nalani was actually starting to let herself breathe.
