I half limped my way up to Suki’s apartment. The fresh wounds on my chest and arms still stung from being patched up. My latest mission had turned into a huge fiasco. It started out as a simple C-B mission and lengthened into an A needing an extra week of away time to sort out.
Mendokusei, it was a pain in the ass when clients lied about the severity of their problems to save a few bucks. It never worked and sometimes led to casualties because of low ranking ninja being assigned to the mission. I grunted and shoved open her door. I saved it from banging against the wall when I remembered the current time. She hadn’t jumped out of the shadows to strangle me so she was probably asleep. I crept through the living room, there were books scattered everywhere. She didn’t know, but I knew she read those weird mystical creature romances when she got really nervous. I crept into her bedroom throwing my vest on the sofa as I passed.
I looked at her sleeping form from the doorway. She was still dressed, a novel still half opened in her hand. I walked over manoeuvring around the piles of books littered across the floor. I gently took the book from her hand and placed it on the night stand. I reached over to pull the covers up and something shimmered in the moonlight streaming in through the window. There were fresh tears on her cheeks. I smiled, troublesome woman probably drove herself insane worrying about me. It was the same whenever a mission took more then a day or two. I would come home to her being mad at me and she would start bawling. It was troublesome and reassuring at the same time. There was always this nagging at the back of my mind that I would come back one day and she would be with a better man. But seeing her so upset with worry always crushed that feeling.
I tore off my under shirt, being careful not to catch any of the cloth on my new stitches and climbed in next to her. I pulled her back to my chest and gently threw one arm over her entwining my hand with hers. I heard her sigh and she shifted her body closer to mine. I smiled and kissed her cheek. I pulled the sheets up and rested my cheek on top her head.
I was back home with my girlfriend where I belonged.
