They went to a tiny café that was open all night, ordered coffee, and sat in a back booth. And this being London, no one even questioned why they were dressed as a pirate and a dance hall girl.

"That was just wonderful, what you did," Becky said.

Freen basked in her praise.

"So, where do you want to go on our date?" Freen said.

"We don't have to go out," Becky said.

"Oh, I can still afford a decent meal," Freen said.

"That's not what I meant."

It took Freen a minute to get exactly what she meant.

"Becky, what are you saying? Do you mean that-"

"I can't stand being without you, Freen. I thought I could, but I'm not that strong. And I think I learned something in the last week."

"And what was that?"

"There are worse things than failing. Or being hurt."

Freen smiled. How she loved this woman. "And what might they be?"

"Never trying at all."

Freen knew the time was right. Now or never. And she thanked her lucky stars that she'd never stopped hoping, and never stopped carrying the ring.

In complete pirate regalia, with everyone's eyes on them, she got down on her knees on the linoleum floor of the café, fumbled in her pocket, and pulled out the ring box, then said, "Becky, would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

With tears in her eyes, and to Freen's utter relief, she said yes.

And everything was different that night, when they returned to her bedroom in the charming little Victorian. Becky had loved it at first sight, the moment she stepped out of the taxi and into the light rain that had started to fall.

Then they'd snuck in together like a teenage couple trying to pull something over on one set of parents.

They'd laughed at the sight of Eddie and Baco passed out on the huge king-sized bed in front parlor, and Heng curled up beneath a crocheted afghan on a velvet love seat, his booted feet hanging off the side and Riley curled up on the wooden floor beside him.
