Fourth.

The break had just finished and my science teacher was sitting on her chair. She began to browse the textbook, burning us with her predaceous eyes.

"Fuck, she didn't say she would do an oral test" I complained to myself in a whisper, taking my head between my hands.

Mark, sitting next to me, was pretending to look for something in his backpack so he could avoid meeting Professor Smith's gaze.

"Do you think she draws lots again?" Mark whispered, worried as he searched in his bag.

"Why would she be browsing the book since she arrived otherwise?" I cast an anxious look at him and started to eat my nails.

"No one's volunteering today?" asked the professor, looking at us one by one.

I turned to the rest of the class and realized in fear that no one would offer. I was screwed. If she had drawn it I would have known only my name. I gave a look to Gemini before sitting up again composed.

He's always willing to go as a volunteer and the only time I'm not prepared is when he isn't. I complained between me and myself crossing my arms and shaking my head disappointed.

"She won't call your name, don't worry" Mark didn't have the time to finish the sentence because the professor had already opened the book on a random page. She read the page number with a diabolical smile.

"18" she said looking for the student corresponding to the number on the register. I didn't need any confirmation. I was number 18. I held my breath, waiting for her to say my name to the whole class.

"I volunteer for the oral test!" I opened my eyes surprised and turned to look at Gemini. He sat with his hand raised and a determined look as he looked at the teacher.

"Gemini, you really want to add another good grade to the register, huh?" the professor smiled and immediately searching for my name, signaling to Gemini to go near her with his chair.

He got up from his chair and started walking between the desks to reach the teacher. It didn't seem like he wanted to go there at all. But then why the hell did he volunteer?

When he passed by my desk our eyes met, attracted like magnets. "Good luck" I whispered without thinking too much.

He looked at me surprised for a second and then smiled at me. He smiles as if I gave him candy.

"Did you just talk to Gemini willingly without insulting him?" Mark leaned over my ear as Gemini was being approached by the professor.

"Did he just smile at you?" Mark grabbed my arm and shook me, but I was too busy processing what had just happened.

After half an hour I still didn't understand how those words could have slipped out of my mouth without warning. I never felt the need to be nice to him, why should I? We weren't even friends.

But if he hadn't volunteered I would have come home with a bad grade in science. Should I thank him?

"Excellent Gemini, as always" he smiled slightly and returned to his desk, glancing at me as he walked by my side.

"Well, since I will be absent tomorrow for personal reasons, I assign you a task for the day after tomorrow" I sighed resigned and exclaimed a lament.

"You will do a group search. Each group will analyze a different apparatus of the human body. Please, try to make a decent work. The groups, of course, will be choosen by me", I sulked and turned to Mark.

"I know," he complained, understanding my despair and imitating my expression.

The professor smiled diabolically, pulling up her glasses and leaning them on her head. As I listed to the groupes she had formed my eyelids closed more and more. I had not slept at all that night and the reproaches of Dunk as soon as he woke up did not put me in a good mood.
