Thor
The glowing orb swallowed each of us whole, drawing us into a warm blinding light. The sensation of entering was eerie; resembling a viscous bath of liquid. Before I could take another breath, the eerie feeling vanished and was replaced with a gust of strong cool air. Buildings started to appear in my peripheral, then all around me.
In real-time, the dimension assembled before me, the white light fading into structures and shapes that I recognized.
The glowing orb was still present, spitting out Marvallia. Riordan hadn't come through yet.
I walked over to Soren, who was checking his watch.
''Shouldn't she be out by now?''
''Give it a minute. She's not running away.''
Knowing Riordan, she very well could be right now.
Ten seconds later, Riordan slips through the orb with a grimace on her face.
She must've found the feeling of crossing dimensions as egregious as I did.
''Perfect. This way.'' Soren turns around, leading us along a steep street.
I follow along, confused at our location. ''Where are we?''
''Welcome to Righ Dearg.''
My brain short circuits. ''Righ what?''
''Righ Dearg. The Land of the Red King, otherwise known as the Power Sibyl's kingdom.'' Riordan quips.
Just how much has she read since I last saw her? She knows a lot more about all of this than she did just a few weeks ago.
''So the Power Sibyl is a king?''
She smiles faintly, almost as if she's grateful for me asking her questions. ''Yeah. The Maighstirean work for him.''
''Does this guy have a name?'' I scoff.
Soren nearly doubles over in laughter.
''What? What did I say?'' I look at Marvallia, who also has a lingering smile on her face.
''Is this some kind of weird inside joke? Riordan?''
She shrugs.
''Fine. Whatever. I'm just confused about what Riordan is meant to do when she finds out whether she's an Achaid--''
''If she finds out. Achaid's are who our people have looked to in times of trouble. They've led wars, trained to keep the clairvoyant world safe...at least what's left of it. They're meant to be wise decision-makers with the capacity to fight. It's exceptionally rare.''
I huff. ''You do realize she just turned eighteen, right?''
''I'm aware. Your point?''
''Nevermind.''
Marvallia touches my shoulder. ''The physical fortitude of it all manifests over time--the powers, the unprecedented strength. Riordan by now is more than capable of handling her own, Achaid or not. However, it's the mental stamina she needs to build. Finer more curated skills like the channeling and manipulating her energy is the hard part.''
Marvallia was quiet for someone who nearly knew it all. Despite the fact making me slightly uneasy, I wanted to trust her too.
Seeing Riordan's trust slip from the two people who were supposedly meant to protect her makes me unbelievably angry. The last thing I could do was let that exist between her and me and I already felt it happening.
