Riordan
I look into the six cups on my desk, still dumbfounded that none of these people have a damn cell phone.
I guess one useful thing Marv taught me actually stuck.
"Fosgailte airson, Marvallia."
In the blink of an eye, her startled face appeared in the reflection of one of the water-filled cups. Judging by her wide eyes, she seemed just as shocked that it worked as I was.
"Marv!"
"Riordan."
"I want to contact the six governors of the Clairvoyant world. Can you help me?"
"It's 8 in the morning, Riordan--why're you calling me before I've had a glass of wine?"
I pause. "People usually have a cup of coffee in the morning. Something to dry up the drool, you know?"
"Guess I'll make that two glasses."
"Something tells me you already know why I wanna contact them."
Makes sense for why she's up so early.
"Oh really? What gave it away?"
I pinch the bridge of my nose. "Okay, what do you know that I don't?"
"Well, for starters, I've already talked to them."
What?
"Since when? It hasn't even been a day and you were able to rally up six Kings?"
"Five. Five kings. And time works differently here, remember?"
"Right."
"After you left, I spoke with both the Power Sibyl and the Maighstirean. It went well, and they're willing to let you live in the Clairvoyant world and train with them. Learn the ropes, protect the land."
"Ha! You're funny."
She stares at me dead on.
Fuck.
She has to be kidding.
"Look, I told you I wanted no part in this. People already think I'm a hazard. I think it's safe to say they may actually fear me."
"Only The Five Kings."
"Oh! Marvellous."
''After speaking with the Sibyl and the Maigh, a water call like this one was held with the other power governors. They unanimously agreed they would not meet with you—out of concern for their own safety."
A maniacal laugh escapes me. "They're the all-powerful Clairvoyant Kings for crying out loud—what the hell do you mean by that!?"
''Yeah, and an A'chiad's power is closer to a gods' than it is to a king's.''
I exhale sharply, the weight of it all starting to eat away at me. I thought being an A'chaid was just about possessing all six known abilities—not also the sheer amount of power I could potentially hold.
"Riordan, listen. There's Five Kings—"
"Yeah, I'm aware— which now that I think about it--makes no sense because I have six abilities."
