"The Dread Doctors, by T.R. McCammon." Lydia read off of the book. Suddenly she stopped and looked at the book closely before walking again.
"What?" I asked.
"I don't know...there's something about it." She said. "Has anyone actually read it yet?"
"Just me." Malia said. "And I didn't understand any of it."
"We should probably all read it." I suggested.
"Kira's working on it." She said.
We stopped by Lydia's locker and watched as she read it.
"Stiles says he can't find anything on the author, he thinks it's a pin name." Malia says.
"In a small New England town, teenagers are taken in the night and burried alive..." Lydia read. She looked up at us before continuing to read. "Days later they emerged transformed, wreaking havoc and spreading terror, commanded by an ancient order of parascientists known only as The Dread Doctors."
"That sounds vaguely familiar." I said.
"How does it end?" Lydia asked Malia.
"It doesn't. This is supposed to be volume one." She said.
"Oh, let me guess, there is no volume two?" Lydia said.
"I think we're living volume two."
"Then I guess the real question is, is this a novel or someone's prediction?" Lydia asked, more to herself than either of us.
"Hey, guys." I heard a familiar voice say from behind me. Both of the girls' faces turned into smirks when they noticed who it was.
I turned around and saw that it was Theo. I smiled widely.
"Hey." I greeted him, I leaned in and pecked his cheek gently. When I pulled back, he was smiling. When I looked at Lydia and Malia, they looked surprised. I was definitely getting questioned later.
"So, what are you guys up to?" Theo asked, taking my hand in his and intertwining our fingers.
"We were just taking a look at this book that's been confusing us." Lydia said, holding it up.
"That reminds me," I said, "Theo, Scott said he wanted to meet you in the locker room to discuss the book."
"Really? Then I guess I better get going. I'll see you later." He said, kissing my cheek and waving at Malia and Lydia before leaving.
When he was a far enough distance away, both of the girls had been looking at me with their arms crossed and had smirks on their faces.
"What?" I asked, fidgeting with the handle of my purse.
"You kissed him." Malia stated.
"On the cheek." I pointed out.
"Are you guys dating?" Lydia asked.
"Well, we went on a date on Friday..." I said. Her eyes grew.
"And you didn't tell me?!" She said. I rolled my eyes.
"I was going to. Anyways you were in the hospital." I pointed out. She rolled her eyes.
"Well, does Derek know?" She asked. My heartbeat quickened.
"What?" I asked. "Why would you ask that?"
Malia narrowed her eyes. "Your heartbeat quickened."
Lydia smirked. "You're totally still in love with him."
I sighed. "Look, I'm trying. I really am. It's just hard."
Lydia gave me a small smile.
"I know, sweety. Don't worry, it'll get better soon."
