I was disappointed to see the summer end. Despite all that's happened over that period of time, summer was great. It had always been my favorite season. The clothes are cuter and more vibrant, I can lay out in the sun and tan, the lake is the perfect place to relax, and the fruit is more ripe. However, tha fast apporach of fall meant cooling down, baking, crunchy leaves beneath our feet as we walked, and some great date ideas. Spencer and I had almost been together for a full year, even though we've been through all these hardships. Spencer had been great to me. No more secrets, no more lies, no more half-truths. Things were perfect, minus me constantly losing our new found game.
"You're bluffing." I said through giggles.
"Really? Are you sure?"
Yeah. You can't psych me out. I think you're making that one up." Spencer and I have been telling each other stories and truths that are crazy and hard to believe and we have to decide if the other person is bluffing. I've only ever got Spencer a handful of times, but he always catches me when I'm telling a story and not being serious. It's definitely annoying, but with the amount we play, I think I'll be able to catch him at some point. We've been playing this game all month, and when someone loses five times in a row, the loser has to tell the winner an embarrassing story. So far, I learned that Spencer tried playing baseball when he was a kid, and hit himself with the bat right in the nose. He showed me a picture where his nose looked like a hot air balloon trying to escape his face.
"I wasn't bluffing. We actually had a case like that, which was definitely one of the worst ones since rabies are so dangerous and overall miserable."
"Damn it. Eventually I'll win again. You've got onemoe tally until a story, and I've got two. I have a chance."
"Unlikely. I dont know how many more stories you've even got in the chamber. I always win this game."
"I'm the underdog, Spence. I'm going to win this."
"It's cute, and it so good for you that you still have so much hope." He teased, grabbing my face and pinching my cheeks. I playfully smacked his hands away.
"Not hope, just confidence."
"I'm going to start letting you win, I don't want to ruin that confidence of yours." He said jokingly, patting my cheek.
"Oh shut up, I'm going to win." I gave him a quick kiss as he pulled into the driveway of my father's house, dropping me off for the day. My dad and I hadn't really spent much time together recently, but we wanted a day together. He was going to take me shopping and out to eat. We just figured we'd wing the rest of it.
"Bye, I love you. Have fun, and be safe."
"I love you too, you have fun and be safe too. I mean it, don't just wait for me to come back." I said, pointing my finger at him as I got out of the car. The cool air filled my lungs, and the leaves crunched beneath my boots. My dad greeted me at the door with a hug. Your never know by his raging RBF, but he was more excited than I was about spending time together today. When I was younger, we'd do this once a week, but growing up, getting a little brother, and losing my mom just all got in the way. After I lost my mom, I basically lost my dad too. I didn't really get him back until about two years later. Now I refused to lose him again. I got him back, then I was so consumed with college and Jared that I pulled away from him without even noticing.
"Hi dad." I said with a grin. "It's been to long since we've had a day like this."
"It has been. I was thinking maybe we should start off shopping, unless you haven't eaten breakfast yet?"
"Spencer practically forced some fruit down my throat before we left, but if you want to stop and get something that's perfectly fine with me."
"I can stop at Starbucks? I'll get something from there, and I know you aren't going to turn down a coffee."
"You know me too well." I smiled. Dad pulled the car out of the driveway, clearing his throat.
"So, how are things with Spencer? Still good?"
"Yeah, we've been doing really good recently. Nothing bad since the case with Lila." I said her name with disgust. Spending the rest of my life not seeing her was still too soon. I'd recently seen headlines of her stealing a woman's husband. Despite the marriage, Lila went in on him, but I guess she didn't know that the woman was pregnant. It just kept getting worse, but it made me feel less crazy about what happend.
"That's great. What about school? Do you like it?"
"Dad, I think I love it. I think I found my calling, the thing I meant to do. I've got perfect grades, I'm top of my class, and I haven't lost a single scenario case yet. I've only done five, but that's a big deal."
"You're right, that is a big deal. I'm very proud of you. We're going to have to celebrate at the end of the semester." He cleared his throat. "I'm really proud of you for not letting anything stand in the way of your dream. I know you were worried I would be upset, and I know your much rather be with Spencer, or JJ, but you've stuck to studying. " He reached over and ruffled my hair.
"Yeah, I've been spending less time with Spencer than I used to before the whole Lila thing." I admit sheepishly.
"Why? It's been a few months now? It's late August, that was back in June."
"I don't know, it just really hurt, and I don't really know if I can handle that again. I know it sounds corny, but I'm just not ready to fully trust him yet." I said sheepishly.
"If you're saddened by the thought of anything coming between you two, then that means what the two of you have means something." He said, causing me to really rethink things.
"Yeah, you're right. His birthdays coming up, and I just want everything to be perfect for him. I haven't put much thought into it after everything thats been going down. I have to start last minute planning, but I know for a fact that I want it to be a surprise. I'm thinking maybe you could distract him with work stuff, and I could get the BAU all decorated and filled with food and a big cake? Please?" I made a pouty face, hoping he'd say yes. It'd overall make things easier for me.
"Yeah, I can do that. Though, I hope you don't get too big of a cake. I worry I won't be able to turn down too much of it." He joked. He was on some running thing where he insisted on running so many miles every morning, and he was avoiding all set backs. It was pretty good for him though, since he loved being active.
"I'll cut you off if you get too carb hungry." I teased.
"Is there anything in specific I should be doing to distract him?"
"Honestly, anything works. I just need him away for atleast two hours. I have to sneak some stuff from my apartment to the BAU, and I can't have him coming over, or calling. I think I'm going to try and get Uncle Dave to cook, but I'm not sure how well that'll turn out. I'll probably have to bust out my signature pouty face."
"Maybe you should lead with that. I don't think he's ever said no to you when you made that face." I laughed.
"You say that as if you're any different." We ended up at the mall, talking for hours as we walked around. I made him go into a new men's store that opened up. It was surfer themed, and I got him to try on the most ridiculous outfits. He had been in the dressing room, trying on the same outfit for about five minutes when I finally spoke up.
"Dad, come on." I laughed. "It can't be that bad. Just come out."
"It is that bad." His tone was one of amusement.
"Just come out. I wanna see it." He finally walked out. He was wearing swim trunks that were teal with bright orange flowers all over them. They were paired with a bright orange shirt, a straw hat, and the ugliest sandals in the world. He also had sunglasses on the top of his hat to really tie it all together. I couldn't contain my laughter. I burst out laughing, to the point where everyone was staring at me. I didn't even care, it was worth the embarrassment. I ushered my dad back into the changing area, saving him from anymore embarrassment. The day was filled with laughter and joy. I got home just in time to say goodnight to Jack and to eat some leftovers with my dad. The babysitter ordered a large pizza for her and Jack, leaving about half of it for us.
"So basically-" I cut myself off when I heard how muffled my words were by all the pizza in my mouth. "Uncle Sean turned his life around for the better? I didn't know he was doing all of that before."
"I know, but you were pretty young when he started, and he never really wanted to speak to me after I cut him off. It took him a while to understand why."
"I understand why you sidnt tell me, and why you didn't let him babysit me anymore- Oh, Spencer's here." I hugged my dad.
"I had fun today. We need to make this a regular thing." He said.
"Yeah we do." I agreed. "Bye, dad. Love you!"
"Love you too!"(A/N): I feel like we needed a cute dad and daughter moment. Short filler chapter, but still a good one. Get ready for the next one though😏
