chapter 7

SATURDAY, 13 APRIL

It is almost game time and the boys and I are getting ready in the dressing room. As soon as we are done, we head to the field. Our opposing team does their tunnel first and then we do it after them. We play our game and our school wins again. I am not surprised.

After the game, we cheer and sing before making our way back to the dressing rooms. We then exit the dressing rooms and walk to the basketball court where Mpho's game is taking place. As we are walking, I hear a voice calling out to me and I look back.

Didi: hey.
Me: hey.
Didi: you dropped your phone.

She says, handing me my phone.

Me: thank you.
Didi: okay. bye then.
Me: are you busy?
Didi: no, why?
Me: Hlompho is playing right now and my boys and I are headed to the basketball court to watch him.
Didi: okay.
Me: would you like to come with?
Didi: sure.

We then follow the boys, they are just a few steps ahead of us.

Didi: Nkazi.
Me: yes?
Didi: is it okay if I call you that?
Me:  sure.
Didi: I wanted to ask you to help me with some topics in Mrs Mons's subject.
Me: oh, no problem. are you free tonight?
Didi: yes. I was only going to be studying for the practical that we are writing next week.
Me: okay, just video call me when you are ready and then I will help you. I would like to ask that you send me the topics now though.
Didi: okay, let me text them to you.
Me: okay.
Enzo: come on, the game is going to end.
Me: okay, we are coming.

We pick up our pace and catch up to them. We get to the court and the boys are still playing.

Didi: oh, he is really good.

And he is. Mpho is really good.

The match ends and we all head to tuckshop.

Me: are you hungry?

I say, looking down at Didi.

Didi: no.

She goes ahead and buys a water and a chocolate. I walk to the stall and order.

Me: a pizza for two, please.
Lady: anything else?
Me: two packs of Jelly Babies and a small coke.
Lady: thank you.

I tap and we collect our orders. We all then head to one of the round tables at school and sit there to eat.

Me: this pizza is for the both of us. you have to eat.
Didi: but I am not quite hungry yet.
Me: okay but you did not have breakfast nor lunch either.
Didi: how do you know?
Me: you were not at the dining hall in the morning and you have been at the field for most of the day so I know you did not eat lunch.

She eats two slices and drinks a little bit of the coke.

Me: full?
Didi: yes, thank you.
Me: no worries. the Jelly Babies are yours.

I say handing her one packet of Jelly Babies.

Didi: Nkazi-
Enzo: we have to head back to our dorms now.
Me: okay.

We all get up and accompany Didi to her dorm building before heading to ours. We get there, all go and take our showers and then head back to our dorms. I am wearing grey sweats and a black hoodie, with a black t-shirt underneath. It is raining and it is quite chilly this evening.

An announcement is made for us to all head to the dining hall. We get there and take our seats after dishing up. Enzo sees Didi and calls her to come sit with us. She is wearing an oversized t-shirt and sweats.

Enzo: she looks like she's freezing.
Kanyo: she really does.
Enzo: girls will see the weather change and refuse to wear a jacket or hoodie.

She comes and takes her seat in between myself and Enzo. We eat while they have conversation here and there. I am too tired to talk.

After eating, I sit back, drink my water and reply to texts. I look up once and spot Kanyo making a video of me.

Kanyo: you look so sexy, boy.
Me: shut up.

The whole table erupts in laughter. I see Didi rubbing her arms which shows that she is cold. She then sneezes a few times so I take off my hoodie and hand it to her.

Didi: no, I am okay.
Me: no, you are cold. I am not asking you out, I just do not want you getting sick when I could have helped you.
Enzo: Didi, you look like you're already getting sick so please take the hoodie.
Didi: okay.

She takes the hoodie and wears it. Dinner time ends and we all head back to our dorm rooms.

She video calls me and we go trough the topics that she mentioned that she struggles with.

Me: do you need help with the past papers that she gave us as well?
Didi: yes.
Me: meet me at the study lounge tomorrow and we will go trough them then.
Didi: okay, thank you.
Me: okay.
Didi: goodnight.
Me: goodnight.

I end the call and pray then head right to bed. The boys are sleeping, I am so happy about that because that means that I can also go right to sleep. With them awake, I barely get any sleep.
