UNDERSTAND YOUR ABILITIES
As a ballerina, you will develop many strengths and realize your weaknesses. As a starting ballerina, doing ten fouetté turns in a row will be a little out of reach, but after ongoing practice and determination you may begin to develop the strength a fouetté turn requires. Understand that immediate results of a ballet class are UNREALISTIC. It has taken many prima ballerinas years and years to be able to do the exquisite looking dance moves they perform on stage. Something as "simple" as a pirouette may take months to perfect. Don't be discouraged! The amount of time it takes to improve your technique varies from person to person.
Fact: Ballet is a sport. Although this may seem like a no-brainier to some, it is a large controversial subject to others. Ballet requires strength performance, technique, muscle development, and strategical thinking. Like any other sport, ballet will make you sweat, cramp, hurt and will require hours and hours of practice.
Myth: Ballet is only for girls. HOLD UP! What? Guy ballerinas are mostly referred to as male ballerinas or male dancers. Ballet for guys can actually be MORE intense than it is for girls because of the extreme strength ballet requires you to have. Professional male ballerinas normally spend five hours a day in the gym, and the rest of the day in a dance class where they are taught to improve their muscle coordination and develop their technique day in and day out. When someone says that guys who participate in ballet are sissies, dare them to try one class, odds are they'll say no or if they do, the next day they'll be limping and whining about their sore feet. Ballet is NO joke.
