Second PlaceI had just returned home after a long day, the sound of my keys scraping against the doorframe as I entered the house. The familiar warmth of the space hit me, but something in the atmosphere felt off.
I heard voices. Bianca and Amelia talking softly, but there was a sharpness to their words, an undercurrent of something unsaid. Curiosity gnawed at me, but I stayed quiet, stepping toward the source of their conversation, the weight of my footsteps barely audible on the polished floor. As I approached the living room, I felt the conversation shifting, the words becoming heavier, more pointed. I stopped just outside the door, unseen but not unheard.
Amelia's voice softened, but I could still hear the concern in it. "He's quite the character, alright," she said. "But just know I'm here for you. I'm willing to help with whatever you need."
My stomach churned at the thought of Bianca relying on anyone but me, but I pushed the feeling down.
I heard Bianca's voice next, quiet but full of resolve. "Are you sure?"
Amelia's response was solid. "I wouldn't have said it if I didn't mean it."
A brief silence hung between them before Bianca spoke again, her words sharp, determined. "Good. I need to go to Valdebebas... Madrid."
The mention of Madrid stung, and the ache in my chest grew sharper, the realization slowly dawning on me of what that meant. She's going to see him, fucking Jude. The man who hadn't been there for her the way I had, the man who had let her go without a second thought.
I couldn't stop myself. My throat clenched, and I took a step forward, clearing my throat loudly to announce my presence.
"Bianca..." My voice came out harsher than I intended, but it was the only thing I could say in that moment. The pain was almost suffocating, my heart tightening at the thought of her going back to him.
I could see her stiffen, the slight tension in her shoulders telling me she wasn't surprised. Slowly, she turned, her eyes meeting mine, but there was no guilt there nothing that would indicate she knew how much it was hurting me to hear her say it.
"I wasn't expecting you back so soon," she said, her tone casual, almost indifferent.
I had to swallow the lump in my throat before responding. "Amelia," I said, not wanting to address her, "Could you give us some privacy?"
There was no reply, but I could hear the soft shuffle of Amelia's feet, her departure almost silent, as if she knew how much I needed to speak to Bianca alone. The door clicked softly as she left, and I finally turned to face Bianca.
She didn't seem to notice the way my heart was slowly shattering, or maybe she did and was doing her best to hide it. I could feel my emotions bubbling up, and I was having trouble keeping them in check.
"Bianca... what are you thinking?" The words left my lips before I could stop them, my frustration seeping through. The silence that followed only made it worse, the heaviness of her silence pressing down on me.
She didn't even flinch at my question. Instead, she looked at me, and her eyes were colder than they had ever been. "Don't start," she snapped, her voice low. "I had to hear it from Amelia. Jude thinks I'm dead."
I wanted to yell, to demand answers from her. But something held me back. I could see the hurt in her eyes, the deep pain that mirrored my own.
"Why are you doing this?" I asked, my voice quieter now, pleading in a way I couldn't fully mask. "Bianca, I've been here. I'm here for you always. You don't need him."
