Definitely off
•••I put my phone on speaker as I laced up my shoes, balancing on one foot while Vini's voice came through loud and clear. "Bro, did you reply to Melissa? She said she texted you, but you left her on read."
I paused, frowning slightly as I tried to recall. "Who's Melissa?"
Vini laughed on the other end. "The girl I was telling you about the other day, man! The one from Instagram."
"Ohhh, right, right," I muttered, half-focused on tying the other shoe. "Yeah, I meant to reply, but it slipped my mind. You know my text-back game sucks."
"It's not just your text-back game," he teased. "You ghost more people than a haunted house."
I laughed. "I'll get to it. I'm just not in the mood to deal with all that right now."
"You're always not in the mood," he shot back, clearly not letting me off that easily. "I told her you'd get back to her, but now I'm starting to look bad."
I finished lacing my shoes and stood up, grabbing my jacket. "Hear what. As soon as this call ends, I'll FaceTime her before I head out because, you must be on this girl's payroll to be pushing her this much."
"Nah, man, she's just a cool girl. You'd vibe with her," Vini replied, his tone casual but insistent.
"Right," I said, straightening up and adjusting my jacket. "What does she even do for work?"
"She runs the social media account for Nike. Met her on set, and she's really cool. Trust me, she'd match your personality," he said with a chuckle.
I laughed, shaking my head. "See? Already a conflict of interest. I'm signed with Adidas."
Vini groaned. "You're impossible."
"I'm just sayin'. I can't be out here chatting up someone running the competition's account," I laughed
"You're overthinking it, as usual," he shot back. "Just call her."
I laughed again. "Alright, alright. I'm gonna FaceTime her now, happy?"
"Yes!" Vini laughed. "Don't mess this up. You'll thank me later."
"Yeah, yeah, I'll let you know how it goes. Catch you later."
As I ended the call, I let out a breath, glancing down at Melissa's contact info. I'm only ringing her once, I know how women are she sees me FaceTiming her randomly at 10pm she's probably in bed with a face mask on, she's definitely not going to answer but at least I can say I tried.
I tapped her name, hearing the familiar ringing sound as I waited for her to pick up. I wasn't too sure how this would go, but at least I was following through. The screen lit up, and there she was. Damn.
"FaceTime at ten at night you're that guy," she laughed, her voice light and teasing.
"No I'm not actually. Sorry about that. Had a pretty packed day. I wasn't ignoring you, just had a lot going on. I'm actually heading out now but thought I'd say good night first. How are you?"
She smiled, and I noticed she was lying in bed, just like I guessed. Her makeup was off, but her skin had this natural glow. Her hair was pulled up in a bun, simple and casual. I had to admit she was stunning.
"I was just messing with you. I can only imagine what your day looks like," she said with a soft smile. "My day felt long too, but I've gotten used to the routine."
I leaned back a little, feeling more relaxed than I thought I would. "Vini mentioned you work with Nike's social media team? What's that like?"
She nodded, adjusting her pillow. "Yeah, I handle their influencer marketing, content creation, all that fun stuff. I'm part of the team that makes sure people are hyped about new releases and campaigns."
