- Madeline-

The sound of laughter echoed down the hallway as I made my way to my locker. It felt like a distant memory—those carefree moments when I could laugh with Clara and Chloe without a second thought. Now, everything was different. Every time I saw Dylan's smug face, my stomach churned with anger and resentment. He got to live his life as if nothing happened, while I was left dealing with the fallout, abandoned by the people I thought were my best friends.

I glanced over and saw Dylan leaning casually against the lockers, laughing with Aaron as if he didn't have a care in the world. My hands clenched into fists. How does he get to walk away from this? How does he get to look like the good guy while I'm left feeling this way?

I couldn't take it anymore. Something inside me snapped. I wasn't going to let this fester any longer. If Chloe wasn't ready to talk, then Clara was my best option. She was my oldest friend—the one who knew me best. She had to listen.

Clara was at her locker, her hair shining in the sunlight streaming through the windows. I walked up to her, feeling my pulse quicken.

"Hey," I said, my voice steady despite the storm brewing inside me.

She turned, her face lighting up in surprise. "Mads, hey."

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. "I need to talk to you."

She hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Sure. What's up?"

I glanced around to make sure no one was listening. Dylan wasn't far, but he was too busy with Aaron to notice.

"Look," I began, my voice low but firm. "You're my best friend, Clara. You've known me the longest. You should be able to trust me, not Dylan."

Her expression softened, but guilt flickered in her eyes. "I know, Mads. It's just..." She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "He sounded so convincing. And Chloe was so hurt, and I didn't know what to do. I didn't know who to believe."

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my emotions in check. "Do you know how hard it was to go through all this without you guys? Without the two people I thought would have my back no matter what?"

Clara's face crumpled, and she looked down at the ground. "I'm sorry, Madeline. I really am. And honestly, I always felt like you were right. Something about Dylan's story never sat right with me. I just didn't know how to bring it up, not with Chloe so upset."

I nodded, my voice softening. "I understand. But I need you, Clara. I can't keep doing this alone."

Clara reached out and squeezed my hand. "I'll talk to Chloe," she said. "I promise. She needs to hear this."

I nodded, a small flicker of hope sparking inside me. "Thank you."

As Clara walked away, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. Ryker was standing a few feet away, leaning against the wall. His green eyes were focused on me, his expression unreadable.

He pushed off the wall and walked over as soon as Clara was out of sight.

"So," he said, his voice low and slightly amused. "You talked to her."

"Yes, I did," I replied. I hesitated for a moment before adding, "You really motivated me to. And thank you again... for yesterday."

He shrugged, his lips curving into a small smile. "Anytime."

There was a pause before he spoke again. "What ever happened with you and Dylan?"

My stomach dropped. I couldn't look him in the eye, so I stared down at the floor instead. "I already said all I wanted to."
