RIVAR
The relentless rain hammered down from the darkened evening sky, refusing to relent as Rivar's carriage, along with Captain Sara's unit, crossed into the majestic city of Green Leaf. This city, the heart of the Forest Elves' realm and the largest in their dominion, stood as a beacon of tranquillity and grandeur. Unique among its kind, Green Leaf welcomed mortals from other realms, offering them sanctuary and trade within its Western District, nestled at the base of a towering waterfall cliff.
The architecture here was a harmonious blend of elven elegance and natural splendour. Unlike the stone and steel edifices of other realms, almost every building was crafted from rich, fragrant woods, adorned with expansive gardens that burst with life and colour. These living spaces seemed to breathe with the forest itself, creating an atmosphere of serene harmony.
Their horse-drawn carriage halted briefly at the city's border to present their entry permit to a vigilant border guard. With a nod of approval, they were allowed passage, heading swiftly towards their destination—a grand edifice in the heart of the Western District, notable for its size.
The streets of Green Leaf were unlike any Rivar had seen before. They were paved with natural stones, uncut but meticulously arranged, creating a pathway that was both beautiful and practical. The carriage wheels rolled smoothly over the stones, a testament to the elves' artistry.
Captain Sara leading them out of the carriage, wearing an elegant uniform of Aurelia's royal investigators with commanding presence of her rank. She was met by a female human official standing before a grand door framed by climbing vines.
"Investigative Unit from the Capital?" the official inquired, her voice a melody of curiosity and authority.
"Yes, I am Captain Sara. Here is our assignment letter," Sara replied, handing over the document.
The official scanned the letter, her brow arching in surprise. "I must admit, I did not expect an investigative unit to be part of a royal wartime expedition."
"Our expertise in tracking, reconnaissance, and most importantly, prisoner interrogation is invaluable," Sara explained.
The officer's gaze shifted to Harlan, Cirro, and Rivar, her eyes lingering on each with a keen assessment. "Indeed, you seem well-suited for such tasks," she murmured, particularly scrutinizing Cirro.
"Is there an issue with our assignment letter?" Sara asked, seeking clarity.
"No issue. With this letter, the Green Leaf authorities should pose no objection. However, it must be approved by the elders' representative, and they have ceased accepting documents for the day," the official responded.
"Let me guess, there's no room for us in the embassy?" Harlan speculated, a hint of wry humour in his voice.
The official's expression betrayed mild surprise at his accuracy. "True. Although our embassy typically accommodates units like yours, our guest quarters are currently full. The ongoing emergency in the Elder Forest has drawn many officers here for extended duties."
"So, we need to find our own lodging?" Sara asked, her tone edged with frustration.
"Not necessarily. There is an inn owned by an Elder Forest Elf who graciously hosts human guests, especially during this crisis. He charges no fee for royal emissaries," the official explained, gesturing their carriage driver.
The driver nodded in acknowledgment, understanding the task ahead.
"He will take you there. Tomorrow, at first light, Captain Sara and your unit should meet me at the Central District gate. By then, you should gain entry," the official instructed before departing.
