The descent felt endless. It wasn’t a straight fall but more of a slide, twisting in ways that made it impossible to predict the next turn. The passage was smooth, curving like the coils of a massive creature, pulling them deeper into the unknown.
Ron tried to steady himself, but the movement was too fast, too unpredictable. He had no control—just the feeling of being carried somewhere he didn’t want to go.
Eva had screamed at first, but now there was only silence. It felt heavy, unnatural, pressing in from all sides.
He forced himself to breathe evenly, pushing down the fear clawing at his chest. He needed to stay calm, to think, to understand what was happening. Whatever waited at the end of this slide wasn’t going to be welcoming.
Finally, they reached the end of the slide. Bellamy hit the ground first, followed by Eva, and Ron landed last—crashing onto both of them.
"Get off," Bellamy groaned, shifting beneath the weight.
"Sorry," Eva muttered as she hurried to stand.
Ron pushed himself up, instinctively scanning the space around them, but the darkness was absolute. No walls, no shapes, no sense of direction. He could barely make out the others, only aware of their presence through the soft sounds of movement.
The silence was unsettling, but not unfamiliar. He knew this place had been designed to feel like this, intentionally devoid of natural light or obvious exits. The air was clean—too clean. It was filtered, controlled, just like everything else his father’s men had built. That knowledge settled in his mind, not as reassurance, but as a reminder. They weren’t just lost underground. They were inside something meant to contain them.
His breath was steady, measured, forcing his unease to the back of his mind. The faint echoes carried their movements through the emptiness, bouncing off unseen surfaces. The space was larger than it seemed, but until they figured out where to go, it would feel endless.
"Ron?" Bellamy's voice echoed through the darkness, bouncing off unseen walls and multiplying in scattered directions.
Ron glanced around instinctively, but the void was absolute—no movement, no shape, just the lingering sound of Bellamy's voice fading into the emptiness.
"Cool," Bellamy chuckled, listening to his own words ripple through the space.
"Where are we—" Eva started to ask, but the sudden grind of machinery cut her off. A mechanical shifting, deep and deliberate, as something moved beneath them.
A dim white light flickered to life at a single point on the ground, weak at first, then settling into a soft glow. From that spot, something emerged, rising slowly from the earth as if it had been waiting for them.
The device stood hip-high, its base a slender metal rod supporting a smooth, oval-shaped head. Its entire surface gleamed with a steel-white finish, catching the dim light in faint reflections. Thin, meaningless lines trailed across the surface, giving it a sense of intricacy without revealing purpose.
Then, at the center of its rounded head, a shape came into view—a green-lit eye embedded into the metal, its glow steady and unwavering..
Ron felt Eva next to him. Her smile shone softly in the shared light, a comforting sign that she was relieved to see him unharmed. Shifting his gaze past her, he noticed that Bellamy wasn’t close by. Looking to his other side, he found Bellamy standing several meters away, completely absorbed by the robotic device before them.
The device’s "eye" opened, and a steady green light shot directly into Ron’s eyes. He squinted and closed his eyes against its intensity. When he opened them again, he noticed a narrow horizontal line of light moving slowly downward from his eyes, along his body, until it reached his toes before fading away. Confusion washed over him, mirroring the feelings of the others.
