The Letter

My body was still stiff, but I managed to make my way to a nearby bench. I was still creeped out by the events that took place. My parents were never too fond of the Interrogators. They would always have to meet the Interrogators after every mission they went on. At a young age, I asked my parents why they hated meeting them so much, and they said that Interrogators were like demons: inhumane, ruthless, and cunning. I always wondered what they meant by it, and today, I saw a glimpse of what they were talking about.

I stared at the spot where the event happened. Everyone carried on to their destinations like the whole scene never happened. I sighed; I couldn't help but think back to the last five minutes. What a way to start out the school year,  I thought.

I managed to push the thoughts to the back of my head, and I looked around for Alisa. She wasn't anywhere to be found, but I had a feeling that she would come back. Her loyalty is one of her strongest traits. No matter what happened she would be there for me, and I would be there for her. That's what friends do, especially friends as close as we are.

Not wanting to think about anything, I examined the school in front of me. It was larger than I thought it was; I was never this close to it before. The five sections of study wrapped around the main building and their size were all about the same. There were four floors belonging to each building. They were painted white, and the windows lined each floor. The students flooded into the building one after the other. As expected from the number one high school in the nation.

In the midst of my admiration, I heard running behind me. It was Alisa, and she had something hidden in her hand. "Hey! Look at this!" Alisa shouted and handed me a crumpled letter sealed with a blood-red stamp of a panther and a lion.

"Hey, do you know what this is?" I asked with caution.

"Of course I know what it is. This symbol is all over the empire, but I never saw a letter with it." I have, and I remembered the rest of my parent's note. When Alisa came to pick me up, I dropped my parent's message. The note had flipped over and I saw that they had written some more. There was also a picture of the stamp on the letter, but I didn't have enough time to read it. I just dismissed it as another lesson they were trying to teach me at the last second.

"Where did you get this?" I asked unsure if I wanted to know the answer. Knowing her, she might have stolen it from someone's mailbox.

"I followed the Interrogators," Alisa said. Just as I was about to yell out in anger, she continued, "The woman had this in her pocket; I saw it as they walked away. I followed them to see if I could get close enough to grab the letter, but there were too many people. I was about to give up until she bumped into some people. The letter fell out of her pocket, so I grabbed it before anyone could notice. I sprinted back to the school so I could show it to you." She wore a triumphant smile and searched my face for a response. I honestly don't know if she is brave or stupid.

"Did you try to open it yet?" I asked with my curiosity finally getting the better of me.

"I haven't tried it yet. I wanted to show it to you first," Alisa replied fitting her thumb over the seal. Just as she was about to open the letter, the warning bell rang signaling that school was about to begin. "Damn.... I really wanted to read it," she said. She stuffed the letter into her bag.

"Do you want to come to my house after school so we can read it together?" I suggested with my parents note on my mind.

"Sure, but now we have to hurry or we'll be late," Alisa said as she raced toward the building's entrance. I quickly caught up to her, and slammed through the door.

Picture Details:

An average letter is marked with a red wax stamp. It is illegal to take a picture of the empire's seal, so the only available picture available to the public is this one.
