Breaking the Seal

I had completely forgotten about that letter, but as soon as I saw it, the events from earlier that day flashed through my mind. Excited to start our high school careers, Alisa and I walked to the school. When we got there, there was a huge crowd in front of the school, and out of curiosity, we went straight to it. A man, an Interrogator, was lying face down on the pavement. I saw something on his back, so I crouched down to read it. 'Don't believe a word' it warned. After saving his life, a group of Interrogators came to take him away, and Alisa followed them. When she came back, she had the exact same letter as she now had in her hand.

"I want to read it first," she said as she steadied her hand over the seal. The seal was a deep red color, like blood. Inscribed in it was the symbol of the Midland Empire: a panther and a lion circling around the edge of the seal. Looking at it, I was reminded of my parents' letter they left me.

"Sure, but I want to read it right after you," I answered, "If you need me, I will be in the kitchen."

"Okay," she replied.

As soon as she took off the stamped seal, I went to the kitchen. I searched the floor and the counters, but I could not find what I was looking for. I opened the fridge and found it next to the milk. I reached to the side of the carton and took my parents note.

As I thought, I only read the front of the note. I turned it around and found a picture of the empire's seal and a paragraph. It read:

The world is a dangerous place right now. Both inside and outside of the gates, monsters roam. Be careful around the government officials. Something big is about to happen. Knowing you, you will try to investigate whatever you can, but whatever you do, do not believe a word from the government. Be wary whenever you see the empire's symbol. Be safe.

-Love Mom and Dad

Something big? Is that why the empire's gate was attacked? I want to know more, but I have no idea where to start. Something wasn't right. Adults with high ranks seem to be wary of me, but they aren't worried about me. They're worried about my parents. I need to find out what's happening. I should start with the government's letter.

"Willow! I'm done!" Alisa shouted from my room. I quickly went back to my room with my note. Alisa had a look on her face that I have never seen before. She looked serious and her hands were clenched so tight that a white tint covered her knuckles and fingers.

"What's wrong?" I asked, confused to see Alisa like this.

She simply handed me the letter and said, "Read it." As I grabbed the letter, I gave my parent's warning to her.

I fingered through the pages to see that there were eight pages altogether. It read:

Dear Dain,

The events of the past week have not come to the public's eye as well as the Association of Wizards. We will carry out the mission as planned. Last night we sent word to the demons of Mt. Mortem to attack the walls. We will carry out your orders.

We also have several informants in the National Midland School for Magic to watch over the actions of Odin Alexander, the Headmaster. So far, his actions show that he does not know what we are working on.

However, two S level soldiers in the military seem to know what we are planning. Their names are Emma and Scott Hastings. They are the only people that can stop our plan. They have close relations to other top performers in the military as well. Their names are Carmen and Jacob Ford. Both couples are married and have a kid. Last night, the four of them went missing. The department is doing their best to find and kill them before any information leaks.

Also, there has been unrest within the Interrogators. A group within has rebelled against the idea of your organization. By the time you get this message, a rebel would be captured. He will be questioned so we can pinpoint the leader and put an end to the rebellion.

We have also been scouting the citizens to see who is powerful enough to help further our cause. We have found several candidates, but there is one person who stood out. He has the potential to exponentially further our movement.

The next six pages contain information on the four soldiers and their family. The information for the candidate will be on the last page. In the name of the organization, we pledge our loyalty and will make this plan a success. We will conquer the Empire of Midland.

-Sincerely,

Government Department 4

I flipped the page and read the name, Emma Hastings. Under the name was my mother's picture. Around it, there was information about her. It showed where she lived, whom she associated with, her hobbies, her family, her powers, her ranking, where she was last seen, and a summary of her life. Scott Hastings' profile was next, and it had the same categories. Both of my parents had been thoroughly investigated. The next two pages contained the profiles of Carmen and Jacob Ford, Alisa's parents.

When I turned to the next page, I jumped. It was my profile. I scanned all of the information that was available. From school history to hobbies, the information was all right. I examined everything on the page to find anything that could be wrong; I could not find any errors. I stared at Alisa. She had been analyzing my reaction. When she noticed that I had two more pages to go, she said in a monotone voice, "Keep going." I guessed what was on the next page, and as soon as I turned the paper, I found my answer. It was Alisa's profile. Again, everything was right.

After I finished inspecting the profile, I turned to the last page. According to the letter, this was supposed to be the recruit for "the organization." He was just a kid. He was the same age as Alisa and I. His name was Alex Davidson.

I didn't know it then, but this letter would change our lives forever and connect us with an unbreakable bond.
