The group made their way into Harry's Diner, the smell of coffee and fried food greeting them as the door jingled shut behind them. They claimed a booth near the window, its faded red seats just big enough to fit all six of them. The waitress appeared, handing out menus with a smile, and they settled in naturally—Taylor and Logan sitting close together for the act, Ben and Aiden already bickering over what to order, and Tyler ending up next to Ashlyn.
"You'd think we planned this," Tyler muttered, sliding into the booth beside her.
Ashlyn smirked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Yeah, we're just that in sync."
Tyler rolled his eyes but didn't argue, reaching for the menu. The chatter at the table grew, but a weight seemed to hang in the air—the kind that came from people stealing glances when they thought no one was looking.
"Is it just me, or is this place unusually nosy?" Ashlyn asked, her eyes darting to a nearby table where a couple was definitely staring.
"Not just you," Tyler replied, lowering his menu enough to scan the room.
Before anyone could offer more commentary, a young girl with wide eyes and an oversized hoodie approached. She looked like she was building up courage with every step.
"Um..." she started, her voice a little shaky, "are you guys... School Bus Graveyard?" She glanced between them, her awe palpable. "I love your music! My mom and I watched you on SNL. Can I get a picture?"
Taylor beamed instantly, her excitement almost matching the girl's. "Of course!" she said, practically jumping up.
The group obliged, posing for a few photos while the girl's mom snapped away from the side. Tyler couldn't help but notice how Logan leaned a little closer to him in the photo, their shoulders brushing just enough to send a small spark up his arm.
As they sat back down, Aiden smirked, leaning back with exaggerated confidence. "I could definitely get used to this. Fame looks good on us."
Ashlyn shot him a glare, sinking into her seat. "Speak for yourself," she muttered. Attention was not her thing, and the prospect of being recognized everywhere they went made her want to crawl under the table.
The conversations resumed, a tangled web of overlapping voices. Aiden was busy recounting some wild story to Ben, Taylor and Logan were whispering and laughing about something that sounded suspiciously fake, and Tyler, in an attempt to distract himself from Logan's laugh, nudged Ashlyn.
"Hey, look at this," he said, holding out his phone to show her a ridiculous couple's meme. "Totally us, right?"
Ashlyn snorted, her sarcasm kicking in immediately. "Oh, yeah. We're basically couple goals."
Tyler chuckled but didn't press it, sliding his phone back into his pocket. For a moment, he stayed quiet, his fingers tapping against the edge of the table, before he turned to her again, his tone more serious.
"Ash, I... I need to tell you something," he said, his voice low enough that the others couldn't hear.
Ashlyn raised an eyebrow, but before she could respond, the waitress returned, balancing plates of breakfast food. The table erupted into chaos as everyone dove for their orders—pancakes, eggs, bacon, and everything else greasy and comforting.
"Call me later," Ashlyn said, brushing it off for now.
Tyler hesitated, giving her a small nod before grabbing his fork. Across the table, Logan's laugh pulled his attention like a magnet, and Tyler found himself watching him for a second too long before snapping back to reality.
Ashlyn caught the glance but didn't say a word, focusing on her plate instead. Whatever Tyler wanted to say could wait—though she had a feeling it wouldn't be long before it spilled out.
