I could tell people were shouting, but everything was muffled like I was standing behind a thick glass, and they were looking in at me.
I could smell disinfectant, and it was making me kind of nauseous. Or maybe I was moving? I tried to open my eyes but was met by a blinding light and a sharp pain in my head. I closed my eyes but I had opened already opened the door and my senses were flooded with noises and smells and light and I was overwhelmed with it all at once.
Everything faded out and I was once again plunged into the dark.
When I woke up again I felt like I was wrapped in a blanket of fog. My arms felt like they had gained an immense amount of weight each. I groaned in frustration. Where was I?
"Oh my God, Kat? Are you okay are you in pain do you need anything do you need me to get the doctor?" My mom was grabbing onto my arm like I was going to leave her, which at the moment seemed laughable seeing as I couldn't even move my legs. My arms seemed a bit itchy as well.
"Mom?" I croaked out. My mouth was so dry I could hardly speak. I tried to clear my throat and tried again. "Where am I?"
"Oh honey," she said, her voice breaking, "you're in the hospital." The hospital?
"Why?"
"Well you were at the creek that you love so much, and you slipped and hit your head. You have a concussion, but the doctors say you'll be home again by tomorrow night," she said giving me a small smile, but I was sure she was only trying to reassure herself. I sighed quite confused as to how I winded up in the hospital. My mom left after crying into my arm for a bit.
I was actually relieved as bad as that sounded, but I felt guilty that she was crying. I surely didn't need that especially since I was the one in the hospital bed. There was a knock on the door and I turned to look at who was in the doorway.
"Celio," I breathed out.
"Hey there little sis," he said softly, "how you doin'?"
"Not too bad, I guess," I say and I pause a moment trying to find something to say. In the end I go with, "so how'd they find me?"
He turns to look at his feet saying, "I told them, the police. You hadn't come home and I know you hate the cold so staying out there voluntarily was highly unlikely," he said trying to chuckle, but it came out as more of a cough. He was still looking down with his hands shoved in his pockets, and I knew it was a habit he had whenever he felt like he was cornered.
"Thanks Celio. I would probably be in worse conditions if you hadn't called when you did," I responded truthfully. He smiled wide and my heart constricted at the way his face seemed to light up. It wasn't often I got to see it and I hated that. "So who's staying with me tonight?"
"I'm not sure actually. Most likely it'll be Mom- you know how she worries."
We talked and Mom came back and we talked some more and I felt something that I hadn't felt in what seemed like forever: happiness.
Visiting hours ended and Celio left with promises of returning the next day with food from my favorite chinese place. I settled into the hospital bed and Mom made do with the couch. I heard her breathing slow but I knew she wasn't asleep. She often over-thought everything, so at least I knew where my anxiety came from. I decided to speak up to save us from both of our thoughts. "Mom?"
"Yeah sweetie?"
"Can you sing to me?" I asked shyly.
"Oh, um yeah of course. Just close your eyes." I did what she said and felt my shoulders relax. "Esta niña linda que nacio de dia quieren que la lleven a ver a su tia. Esta niña linda que nacio de noche quieren que la lleven a paciar en coche."* I remembered thinking for a long time that my mom was an actual angel. She sure sang like one and it seemed like nothing she could ever do was ever going to be wrong. I was naïve.
My breathing slowed as well and soon I was dreaming of a little girl with big plans in her future.
* This precious little girl that was born during the day wanted them to take her to see her aunt. This precious little girl that was born at night wanted them to take her for a ride.
