Chapter 40 - What Happened Next, Pappy

What happened next, Pappy? What happened to the scary mountain? Asked Cush, the favorite of my many grandchildren. I am grateful for them; the little ones make it worth living. Cush and Pooh are grown now. I have yet another little one from my newest wife - bringing the count up to over forty. She is young and beautiful and wishes only to play at the beach with her friends, many of whom are much younger than her. Her name is Faith, and she looks as much like Julie as any of the women born here in Egup. She will bear another child soon, by next spring, I should think, and if it is a girl, I will call her Tisane, who was my grandmother.

I let Faith stay with her family when she wants. What can I offer her that would keep her interest here in the camp of an old man? I think she loves me just the same and lies in my bed willingly. It is her fate to bear many children in her lifetime; I think most of them will not be mine. Julie told me about a thing called dultry and sin, and where she comes from, people get divorced over such things as lying with other women or even men, if you can imagine such a thing.

We have no dultry here or divorce, which is when a man separates from his woman because she lies with another man. What purpose would it serve to limit the number of children one may have? They die so easily that to ensure one's bloodline succeeds, one needs to have as many wives as possible. And I say wives only because that is what Julie called it. She wanted so much to have things here like they were in the Borealis, in Texas.

Faith isn't as fair as Julie, but more the color of...of sand, and she has long, straight black hair. But she is built like her, wiry and strong. Her tits are firm and larger than Julie's, and they seem to smile and dance when she walks. Perhaps I am getting old because I never thought about tits like that when I was younger. I am almost positive she is a progeny of Julie because of her slim features and smooth skin.

I have no wives taken without their consent. Even the slave girls we have taken in battle with other Clans sleep willingly with their captors; it is the way. And because of this, we are happy, and the children play on the beach when they are not learning how to live.

To answer Cush's question about the Fire Mountain, I told her that no one knows what had happened to it because we had left in such a hurry and never looked back. I told her it was probably a hole in the ground by now, and hopefully, the little bastards were gone, too. Leastways, we never saw hide nor hair of them again.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, amen.

So said the gods among us.
