Violet's POV:
I stepped through the slick portal, leaving behind the suffocating heat of the plain dessert and the peircing crys of circling prey. Jack's hand still encased mine, following me through.
The first thing that hit me was a rush of cold air, sending a shiver down my spine. The pugnent smell bleach and steriliser prickled at my nose, proving contrast to the dense desert air. My eyes watered at the change, stinging.
Feeling my feet land on the hard floor, I stepped forward, leaving the sticky portal behind. I took a look around to find myself on a hospital ward. I recognised the sickly blue of the floor and pale white washed walls. Nurses bustled in and out of rooms wearing the familiar uniforms.
So I was in a hospital. In the future. The reality of the situation sunk in, familliar butterflies of nervousness returned to my stomach. I turned to Jack to find him already staring at me, he looked away quickly. 'Well that was awkward...' I thought silently to myself as he coughed uncomfortably. I smiled a wicked smile before asking my question, "Why are we-..." I trailed off when I saw the woman lying in the hospital bed across from us.
Jack saw where I was looking and did a double take. The frail woman that lay in the bed had familiar chestnut coloured hair with ice blue eyes. She looked to be around twenty-five and was quite pale. Her small wrist was encased in a larger hand which also seemed to spark recognition. I stepped forward slowly, unable to see the face matching the hand.
Suddenly I was pulled back violently by my wrist and shoved into the wall. My captor placed a hand on either side of my head. I gulped nervously, Jack's hot breath fanned my face from millimetres away. Our eyes locked as he leant his muscular frame aginst me.
My breath caught in my throat as his dark eyes scanned my face. "I'll go in first, you stay here." he stated sternly, removing his body heat from mine. I watched as he walked through the divider curtain and into the room of the woman that looked a lot like myself. I slid down the wall to sit onto the floor. Waiting his return.
Thoughts clouded my mind. Could it possibly be me- with Jack holding my hand just like he did moments before. If it was my future self, why was I in hospital- WITH JACK? I sighed warrily watching the world around me.
An old looking woman in torn clothes walked past with a nurse hanging by her side. I remembered how Jack had said that no one could see us apart from eachother and yet this woman looked straight at me. She paused in front of me, looking from the woman in the hospital bed to myself.
The nurse who looked to be a young, bubbly woman, tugged gently on the woman's arm. "Come on now Mable. Back to the Phsyciatric Ward." The woman's, who's name I assummed was Mable, eyes widenned, recognition forming in her grey eyes.
I heard her whisper, "Angel." Softly before taking the whole ward by surprise. "ANGEL! I'M NOT CRAZY! THERE'S MORE OF US! I CAN PROVE IT!!" She screamed, making me flinch. How could she see me? I saw half of the staff pause, panic crossing their features. Earth Angels.
Mable was speaking again as nurses crowded either side of her. "Tell them angel! Show them that I'm not insane." She was looking right at me, a haunted expression on her face. I leapt up as they dragged her away, kicking and screaming.
"I'm sorry! I don't know how to tell them." I shouted after her. An uneasy feeling nipping at my stomach. I felt tears drip down my cheeks, wetting my eyes.
"Never mind dear, you'll come through for us!" Mable said before disappearing at the end of the corridor. You'll come through for us? What was that supposed to mean and how could she see me?
Just then Jack came out of the hospital room, face pale. A confused expression muddled on his face at my tears before he raced towards me. He grabbed me into him, nuzzling my face into his chest. I took in his scent, calming myself. "We need to leave." He said into my hair while rubbing my back soothingly.
"We're not supposed to be here" He continued, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards where Mable had disappeared. Our departure was interrupted by a shout. The voice sounded familiar. I looked to Jack to make sure sure it wasn't he who had shouted.
We turned slowly to see an older man sloping towards us. He looked to be around twenty-five, of muscular build and dark eyes with sparks of gold laced through. Jack.
I felt as though I was suffocating. The older Jack reached us and took me into an embrace, "Be careful." He murmered in my ear before placing a necklace in my palm. I looked down to see my own angel necklace, the one my grandmother had given me. I raised my head about to ask why to see him disappearing back into the hospital room.
I slipped the necklace into back my pocket, deciding not to tell Jack what his future self had given me. Jack grabbed me by my arm again, we looked at eachother as we raced down the corridor...
