CHAPTER 12
Candice
There was a sign in front of the building, one I didn't really notice until we came up close. Another motel. Way worse than the last one, but it was still something. Something better than nothing.
"I'll ditch the car somewhere, and I'll come back."
"What about the guy?" I asked, looking at him.
"Take him with you. He'll follow. But don't try to kill him." Gideon replied before opening up his wallet and handing me a few notes. "Just one room for today. We'll leave by evening."
"What about the things in the back?"
"I'll bring them."
It was already getting way too late. He had been driving for over two hours now. The sun was going to start rising any time soon.
"Are you sure?"
He nodded, "It won't take long. Go, settle inside and I'll try to return as quickly as possible."
I reached the door handle, "I'll take some of the things from the back."
Once I stepped out, I headed into the back of the truck and removed some of our bags, including mine, which I balanced over my shoulder and in my arms. I took all of the bags and walked over to the side door, where the man was sitting inside.
He opened the door from the inside and came outside. He stood silently, waiting for my order or Gideon's.
"Go follow her and remain quiet," Gideon said from the inside, his head tilted back. "If he says something, restrain him, Candice."
Like, I know how to do that.
"Come back fast."
With that he left and I stepped away from the parking lot and headed toward the entrance of the motel. The guy followed me closely. I gave him a couple of the bags I was carrying and continued on my way to the front desk.
There was an old woman sitting in the front, wearing one of those glasses that were too thick.
"Welcome, dears." She said, smiling at us. "Looking for a place?"
"Yes."
"One room or two?"
"One for both of us," I nudged at the man behind me.
"For the night?"
I shrugged, "Yeah. Probably."
"Alright," She smiled, her wrinkly cheeks going higher. "If you want to stay for longer, you can. We have this amazing deal."
"I would like to get some sleep right now. But thank you."
I tried to make it quick so the woman wouldn't think that the guy standing next to me was a complete freak who didn't say a word to anyone and didn't move. I handed over the cash to her and headed to the room on the ground floor itself.
It was a two-story motel. There was no one here this early in the day except for that old woman and the two of us.
I headed into the room and switched on the lights before placing the bags on the ground. Turning back, I only saw the guy whose name I was still not sure about yet standing by the door.
"You can come inside," I stepped to the side. "Come on,"
The guy did so, keeping the remaining bags aside and just standing there. I closed the door and sat down by the window to see when Gideon would return. It had been only a few minutes. But he did leave me with an alive werewolf all alone, which was risky. Because I didn't know the extent of control I had over myself right now.
"If I tell you to sit down, are you going to sit down?" I asked, looking into his eyes as intently as Gideon did.
And the guy sat down on the chair that was there.
"What's your name? Tell me your name."
He hesitated for a moment, unsure if he was even capable of doing that. He took a deep breath, then answered.
"Jeremie,"
Jeremie. That was his name.
"What were you doing there with your friends, right? Or your pack?"
"We were following a vampire trail after we had found a body."
Yeah, that was me.
I sighed deeply and asked him another question, "Do you know what I am? I'm not only a vampire."
"I know," Jeremie stated plainly.
"How do you know?"
"We were informed about the two creatures of darkness, of shadows roaming cities and towns. We were asked to keep a look out for such beings during the night."
My brows furrowed into a tight knot. "Who? Who asked you?"
He shifted slightly in his seat. "I don't know who the woman was."
A woman?
"What did she look like?"
"Young. She had been going around informing wolves from different territories about this."
Lucy?
No.
It can't be.
"Was she a rogue?"
He nodded, "She was a rogue."
Fuck. It was her.
"She told you about us?"
"Yes."
I rose up from my seat before pacing back and forth. Lucy knew. She knew about us. She knew that I was with Gideon, that I had changed, and that I had fled Thornwood. What did she want now? She wanted me to become this, she let me become this. But why was she now trailing me? The both of us? What more did they want?
There was something else at play here. Something bigger.
"She informed you about us, right?" I looked at the guy sitting once more. "And told you to be cautious. But what did she want? Why had you and your pack followed us to the motel?"
"She wanted us to capture you."
My stomach dropped like a rock. My throat tightened up.
Capture us? For what reason? Why?
"For what reason? There's no way anyone, you or your pack can capture us."
"The woman assured us we will be given a way."
"What way?"
He seemed to hesitate for a moment. "Something—something that can stop both of you. Not necessarily kill you—"
"But contain us." My jaw clenched as my nails dug into my palms. I paced back and forth across the room before stopping suddenly at the sound of footsteps approaching outside.
I glanced back towards Jeremie, who was still seated silently, and then back at the door before pulling it open.
"You're back."
"Didn't take too long." Gideon stepped inside with the remaining of the bags and dropped them with the rest.
I closed the door as he came inside before turning to him. "There's another complication."
"There is? What?"
"Another weapon. Not the sword or the gem. They would never give it to her knowing what it can do." The color drained from my face as I spoke, "There's something else that Lucy has, that my grandfather has. Something that will hurt us. And that's why those wolves were there today. They wanted to take us."
"Where?" he questioned, narrowing his gaze at me.
"To my grandfather."
