CHAPTER 11

Candice

"What the—" Gideon looked down from the top floor, looking at the scene below. "We need to go."

"They'll follow us,"

His hand came around my arm as he moved me away from the open railing and toward the stairs at the other end of the hall.

"And we can't take the car because they'll see us doing so."

"It's fine. We can run—"

"Or we can kill them," I cut him off, and he stopped mid-stairs. "They are just three of them, and if we kill them, no one else is going to know about the body or anything at all."

"No, Candice. We're not doing that. Kill one wolf, and there'll be hundreds after us, and unless you want to kill in hundreds, we need to leave."

"I'm not afraid to."

"Neither am I. But you will regret it later."

"I don't care—"

"But I do." He pulled me down the stairs and then pushed me against the wall at the side of the stairs, behind a thick pillar. "Listen, it's not that I don't want it. It's not that. Because I would love to, I'd love to wipe their existence off this fucking planet with you, but that isn't right. The more you feed into it, the more it becomes stronger and harder to control. And right now, you need to control it."

I looked up and then to the right where the sounds of howls echoed through the night. The wolf, and the guys, they were moving across the motel, going into each room to find us.

"It's hard," I whispered, shutting my eyes.

"I know, but once we're away, it will be fine."

I looked up at him and gave a nod.

He placed his hand on my back and started leading me out from an open entrance in the back by one of the rooms they hadn't raided yet. Behind the motel, there wasn't much, just some tanks and then a long stretch of field ahead.

The fence wasn't too tall, but it was wired, which terrified me for a moment until I realized it wouldn't do much.

"Come on," Gideon said, his voice still low. "I'll lift you up, and you can go down first."

"What about you?"

"Don't worry about me."

"What about the stuff in the car?"

"It doesn't matter. I'll get you more once we're away from here."

His hands went around my waist, and he lifted me up.

"Go," He whispered.

I reached over and grabbed a hold of the other side, pushing myself over the fence and landing on the ground. My knees bent, and I fell straight to the ground and into the dirt and grass.

Groaning, I slowly rose up and looked ahead at the stretch of field and the dark night ahead. But that wasn't all that I saw.

I saw wolves—in their forms.

Dozens of them. Staring back at me with those glowing eyes, ready to rip me apart.

Fuck.

I stepped backward until I was pressed against the fence. My heart was pounding, my mind racing. Black smoke began forming around me, swirling around my arms and legs. My breathing quickened, and I tried to steady myself, trying not to panic.
