We lived in the mountains. Everything’s covered by ice and snow. My tribe has survived here for many years, living in peace. Not a soul from the outside world has ventured here. Mostly because of the legend that men could turn into wolves. That they would eat your soul if you ever crossed their path.

They call them the monsters of the mountain, Banes. Which mean poison and destruction, but its all legend. At least it keeps the outsiders away. Their so foolish to think that men could transform into an animal.

“Ava!” my father yelled snapping me out of my reverie.

“Yes father I know. I have to take the dogs out.” He gave me an approval nod. I whistled for the dogs and two white haired mongrels ran to me almost knocking me over.

“Yield!” I said and they immediately stopped.

I walked them out the hut and started heading out the village but just before I stopped by the river located in the center of the village. Orion was on the other side catching water. As soon as he saw me he waved and gave me his best smile. You see we are betrothed but not by choice.

I waved back and went to the opposite side of the river to take a sip. The river had the cleanest water on this side of the mountain.

My blonde hair almost white reflected off the water and my pale skin stood out like a sore thumb. Always dull I thought. That’s what all this snow and no sun will do to a person. Even so I appreciated my brown eyes which had a speck of olive green in it. They were striking and could knock anyone off their feet if they stared too long.

Having enough of my reflection I led the dogs out the village. I’ve done this a million times so I knew just where to lead them.

To the waterfall.

I trekked over almost 3 feet of snow and since it was still snowing I knew it would rise. After what felt like ten moon years I rounded the corner and there was the waterfall. Breathtakingly beautiful. I let the dogs run around, they seemed happy. I was about to chase one when I heard the snow crunch. I was on alert almost instantly.  I was the only person that knew about the waterfall.

I took out my boomerang which had a sharp tip, so it could cut just about anything.

“Abattoir!” I yelled to the dogs in my people’s old language. It meant get ready to attack. They started growling.

I looked around trying to see through the snow covered trees.

“Come out or I send the dogs in.” I yelled.

There was silence, and then I saw someone leave the shadow of the trees. He was a man or boy, I didn’t know. All I knew was that he wasn’t from around here, he was from out there.

“Who are you and where are you from?” I asked with a deadly glare.

He stared back and then took a step as if to run. The dogs  growled and he immediately went motionless.

“… My name is Gill and I’m from Louisiana.”
