“Do you need anything?”

“No I’m fine.” I said as I propped my foot up against the chair. Surprisingly after the incident my foot began to feel better and better, but I swear I thought I broke it. The fall must have not been as bad as I thought.

“I think I’m gonna stay awhile.” He said. He had walked over to where I was sitting and took the seat next to me.

“Well I think you should, well until the storm has passed. It probably will tomorrow, but once it has I’ll get you out of here.”

“No Ava. Even if the storm passed tomorrow your foot wouldn’t be healed and I don’t have it in me to ask you to limp me out of here.” He put his hands on his knee and made the longest sigh.

“Well don’t worry about me and if it bothers you so much you can just carry me.” I said trying to lighten the mood.

“And what will you do to get home. Crawl! I’m not that much of an asshole.” The truth is, he’s right. I can’t help him if I’m injured. I feel responsible even if it was his bloody fault. We sat there in silence, until I heard a light snore.

Long after Gill had fallen asleep I sat up and watched the snow fall outside. I had been sitting up all night because my ankle kept protesting. I thought it was getting better and them wham, a shooting pain started to shoot up my foot. As childish as it may be I wanted my father. He would’ve comforted me and kept me company.

I looked over to Gill and my heart stopped. He was beautiful, who knew people could look like him. I‘ve seen attractive men before but Gill had something about him. I almost touched his cheek, but drew my hand back. What am I doing? I’m betrothed to another and I’m thinking about Gill. With the thought of Gill, I slowly fell into a deep slumber.

“What are you?” I don’t know how I got here, but here I was standing alone in the woods. The snow fell lightly and I felt it on my skin, but I wasn’t cold. I stood there staring into the eyes of a beast. I couldn’t see the face or the body but the way it breathed and growled concluded that I was speaking to a monster.

“I have come for you.” It said in a raspy voice. Its breathing started to get louder and my heart started to race.

“N-no.” I said.

“I am here to take you away.” Its voice boomed, shaking every tree and rustling every branch.

“W-why?” my voice trembled.

“Because you are my d-”

“Hey! Wake up.” Someone shook my shoulders and I sputtered to life. I opened my eyes and Gill was still shaking me.

“I’m awake, I’m awake.”

“You scared me for a second. I kept shaking you but you weren’t waking up.”

“It was just a nightmare.” I started to rise but my ankle screamed with pain. Within seconds of my struggle Gill had was by my side. One had on my waist and another holding my hand. He was so close I almost forgot about the pain. I leaned into him automatically and he went frigid.

There I go again doing things like this. I quickly backed off him and he let go of me. I’d rather limp for the rest of my days than have him go stiff every time we were close. It’s just insulting.

“I’m fine.” I said as I limp away.

I took a bath and Gill did as well. After I made some oatmeal, Gill and I ate in silence.

The storm had passed just as I predicted and we had to go out and help clean up and do the morning chores.

“Are you ready?” I asked him. I hadn’t told him about the chores because I honestly didn’t think he would still be here.
