Sane's POV
Waking up on a grass-covered landscape, I scanned my surroundings, noticing the fresh smell of earth mixed with the faint saltiness of the ocean breeze. Nearby, I spotted a young woman and an androgynous-looking man. How do I figure he's a man? His posture gave him away—subtly wary yet deliberately relaxed, like he was trying not to appear too concerned. He cast a quick, softened glance at the woman beside him, who was still fast asleep. Might I add, she's a beauty. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulder as she stirred faintly in her sleep, oblivious to her surroundings.
The man, meanwhile, briefly surveyed the area. He seemed to take in the scene with broad strokes rather than honing in on any one detail. It was a classic male behavior—assess the immediate situation for danger first. Women, in contrast, tend to notice smaller details or inconsistencies. That difference had saved my skin more than once.
The woman stirred again, slowly waking from her slumber. Her eyes fluttered open, her movements graceful yet cautious. I decided to greet her with a polite nod and a warm smile, hoping to leave a positive impression on both her and the man. Since I had no clue what was happening, making allies seemed like the smartest move.
"Good morning," I said in a calm tone, trying to come across as friendly.
Her gaze lingered on me for a moment, hesitant but not hostile. After a beat, she introduced herself. "My name is Shenhe," she said softly, her voice carrying a serene but guarded quality. She went on to explain, somewhat reluctantly, that she and her friends were traveling across different worlds.
Intriguing. I couldn't help smirking to myself at the thought. If they're hopping between worlds like I am, sticking with them could lead to some real fun. Still, something in her tone told me it'd take time to earn their trust.
After Shenhe's hesitant introduction, the man finally spoke. "Rimuru," he said casually, tossing in a lighthearted reference joke that managed to earn an amused chuckle from me. I could already tell we'd get along well enough—at least, we wouldn't be adversaries. Interestingly, we even shared the same last name.
"So," I asked with a grin, "if you're traveling between worlds and just arrived here, would you mind if I tagged along? I'm kind of doing the same thing—hopping worlds in search of some fun!"
Rimuru narrowed his eyes at me, his expression carefully neutral, while Shenhe tensed, her unease evident.
"Come on," I added, slipping into a deliberately annoying tone, "I haven't done anything bad, have I? Why so tense?"
With an exaggerated sigh, Rimuru relented. "Fine, you can come along—just try to stay out of trouble, will you?"
Grinning, I gave a playful salute before dropping the act.
Looking around, Rimuru pointed southeast. "There's a port city over there. Let's head that way."
I made a mental note of his apparent internal compass—how curious—and nodded. Shenhe, meanwhile, agreed with a curt nod, her tone clipped but calm.
As we began walking toward the city, the scenery unfolded like a painting: rolling grasslands bathed in warm sunlight, a soft ocean breeze brushing against my skin. The tranquility of the moment was almost hypnotic, and for a while, I found myself lost in the beauty of it all. It had been so long since I'd been able to enjoy a moment like this—almost enough to forget my two companions.
