The sun bounced off the window causing my eyes to flicker along with it as it ducked in and out of the trees along the motorway. Sun. Not something that English people are usually accustomed to. Despite the fact that it always rains and harsh winds blow in your face even during the summer months, I like England. It was my home.
As 7 year olds go I am tough, and not girly in the slightest, even though everyone told me that I would change I was adamant that I wouldn't. Another thing to mention, I am extremely stubborn.
The taxi driver filled the background noise with his typical taxi driver babble as he conversed back and forth with my parents, with the occasional comment from my older brother. I blocked him out along with everyone else. I'd always liked the idea of going to Australia, on holiday of course. I really did not like being forced to do things that I really did not want to do, which unfortunately is exactly what had happened today. The taxi driver cruised through the motorway lanes in Australia, Sydney, to be exact making his way towards the suburbs, edging closer and closer towards my future home.
.........................
The car pulled up with a jerk and I could feel everyone taking a deep breath in relief, we had arrived. I however, did not inhale but instead kept quiet. A lot of the time when people relocate to different countries they leave their pets behind. We, did not. We brought our fun loving 5 year old yellow Labrador named custard along with us. She was the only thing right now that made me feel slightly at home. While the rest of my family started lugging suit cases around I leaped at the opportunity to take the dog for a walk, considering the poor thing had been in a plane for a long time. I quickly wizzed it past my mum and set off. I had no idea where I was going, nor did I care. I hated the fact that we'd moved, nearly as much as I hated my parents for making us move. I had a life back home, friends, family. Everything. Now, I have nothing.I was not paying any attention as to where I was going, but then again it didn't matter. I had no idea where I was anyway. I was too wrapped up in my thoughts, which as a result made me even angrier. I finally came to the conclusion that I was even more lost than when I set out. After a moments thought, I decided it was best to stay put and sit down as a sort of mini protest, but mainly, that it would be easier to find me when my parents actually realized that I had been missing for a while. As I sat pondering to myself about the many things I could do to get myself shipped back home again, something slimy started to tickle my leg. A giggle escaped my lips for a split second until I regained my 'strop' composure, realizing that usually during protests you're not supposed to laugh. My isolation was interrupted again when this slimy sensation found my leg again. I looked down to find a black lab cross type dog (I was surprised I didn't know the type- I'm a dog enthusiast.) licking my leg.
"Molly, Molly, you can't lick strangers legs!" I heard someone cry, but I chose to ignore it in order to stay in 'protest mode.' The dog wondered away, surprisingly not having a chinwag with Custard. I presume the boy who was In charge of this dog had also wondered off elsewhere.
"Why do you look so grumpy?" I turned to see a bright blue eyed and blonde haired boy staring at me. "No, the more I see, I start to get a sad/angry/I'm pretending to be tough kind of vibe going on," he said as he cocked his head, examining me.
"Pretending to be tough?!" I exclaimed, shocked at his statement.
"Yeh, you've got tears in your eyes,"
"No I do not."
"Fine then, why are you sad? What's wrong?" He said this in such a way I couldn't help but feel comforted. I stuttered for a while chocking on my words, not realizing how much emotion I seemed to have stored up,
"This isn't my home," was the only thing I seemed to choke out.
"What do you mean?" He pushed.
"I'm English." I sobbed again.
"I can see that," he smiled, not in a harsh way that made you feel uncomfortable, but a way that made you feel accepted.
"Next question. If this isn't your 'natural habitat' why are you here?"
"I don't know, my Dad." He gave me a funny look and tilted his head even more resembling a dog. I went on to explain the whole story of how my dad got relocated here for work and how I was not happy about it in the slightest. Who knows how long we were sat there but my eyes dried up and I felt slightly better. He readjusted himself on the seat turning to face me more,
"So, if I'm correct, your new here today?"
"Yes."
"How do you know where you are then, if you don't mind me saying, I don't usually see many people around this part of the woods." I replied simply,
"I don't."
"Oh," he said the corners of his mouth curling up into a grin, "I'm Luke, Luke Hemmings and I shall be your guide." "But first, I must know your name."
"It's Emilia, Emilia Walshe," I said smiling.
"Ok, Emilia, Emilia Walshe, we must get you home before the monsters come out." He replied grinning,
"If you are talking about my parents then do we have to?" I groaned,
"Emilia Walshe, that is for you to decide, but seriously it's getting dark, I'm hungry and these woods creep me out." I couldn't help but smile. He had this affect on me.
"If you don't mind me asking Lucas Hemmings, how old are you?" he turned to me and said, "I am 7 years old and proud. You?"
"Same." And with that, we linked arms and sang the wizard of Oz.
.........................
We arrived at a cross road, which I thought looked vaguely familiar, we stopped and luke pointed in one direction saying, "I live down there," I squinted and I swore I could see my mum and dad talking to a blonde lady quite a way down the road.
"Me too," I said and we continued to head in that direction.
As I reached my parents my mum smiled and simply said, "nice walk?" I nodded and waved at Luke who seemed to have stopped next to the blonde lady. That's when I saw it, the resemblance, it must be his mum.
"Nice to meet you Emilia," the lady smiled, she had the same blue eyes as luke which made me feel very calm. She turned to luke and laughed,
"I see you too have met," Luke stood up tall and replied,
"Yes we have, she knows all the words to the wizard of Oz" we both laughed then said our farewells as he assured me that if he stood their any longer he would die of hunger. I was a little peckish myself and bade my way inside to find some food.
...................It's funny how your day can change, how one thing can make you feel more at home. I'd gone from having nothing, to having something. A little something that I could hold on too in the times that I was falling. A safety rope, pulling me home. At this point I wasn't sure where my home was. I just knew that a home with Luke Hemmings in it, was a home I'd love.
