chapter 28
cuff 'emangie's car skidded to a stop at the dock, the tires screeching as she jerked the wheel, narrowly avoiding the police cruiser parked at the end. she threw the car into park, eyes scanning the scene in front of her. her heart skipped a beat as her gaze landed on the familiar figures of john b, jj, pope, and kiara. but where the hell was sarah?
the boat had already been pushed away from the dock, and john b was at the helm, his back turned to her as the engine roared to life, sending the boat speeding out into the water. angie's stomach sank. this wasn't how it was supposed to happen. she stepped out of the car, feeling the weight of confusion press down on her chest.
"she didn't show?" angie asked, her voice thick with disbelief as she glanced from one face to another, searching for answers.
kiara exchanged a look with pope before speaking up. "she wouldn't leave him," kiara said quietly, her tone carrying an edge of worry. "not after everything that's happened."
angie's mind raced, trying to piece together the situation. the events of the past few days had been a blur, but she knew one thing for certain: sarah wasn't the type to just disappear without a reason. where was she?
jj, ever the realist, gave a sharp nod. "we'll find her," he said firmly, his voice low but full of determination. "but right now, we have to go."
before angie could respond, the sudden wail of sirens broke through the tension, followed by the screech of brakes. she whipped her head toward the sound, her breath catching as a fleet of black vehicles skidded to a halt nearby. the doors flung open, and men dressed in tactical gear and armed with guns flooded out of the vehicles, their faces masked with grim determination.
angie's heart clenched as she realised what was happening. this wasn't just about sarah or the pogues anymore. it was bigger. much bigger.
the group turned as one, their eyes darting between the armed men and the boat that was quickly disappearing into the distance. they all raised their hands in the air, as instructed by a man with ray bans. it wasn't long before a familiar figure emerged from the chaos.
"where the hell is he?" shoupe's voice rang out, sharp and commanding as he scanned the group with an intensity that made angie's skin crawl. his eyes flicked from one face to another, his gaze settling on angie for a beat longer than necessary. he wasn't asking out of curiosity; he was expecting an answer. and fast.
"where the hell is john b?" his voice was cold, demanding, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the group. the question hung in the air like a bomb waiting to go off. angie's gaze flicked to the others, but no one said a word. "jj, good to see you're living up to your name; pope? how about you? you going to tell me where he is?"
neither boy answered, everybody just remained frozen in place like statues and it gave angie the urge to laugh. "something funny evangeline? what are you doing here, huh? wrong side of the island for someone like you."
"yeah. fancied a day trip." angie replied, her tone thick with sarcasm, earning a snort from jj.
"cuff 'em." shoupe ordered, his voice cutting through the air like a knife. the cops around him snapped into action, pulling out their handcuffs and quickly clamping them around the wrists of john b's friends.
angie flinched as a pair of officers grabbed her arms, pulling them behind her back, the cold metal biting into her skin. she glanced over at pope, and he met her eyes with a panicked look, his breathing a little too fast. but she gave him a reassuring nod.
"just stay silent," she instructed him softly, her voice steady despite the chaos unfolding around them. pope's wide eyes flickered to her, and after a beat, he nodded, his shoulders slumping slightly as if her calmness gave him a bit of reassurance.
