Twenty Years Later...

A loud gasp left my lips and my eyes widened. Draven stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening seeing the complete horror in mine.

"What? What's wrong?" He panicked.

I walked up to him and grabbed a chunk of his hair, pulling it down over his forehead so he could see it. "You're growing grays."

His panicked features contorted into a scowl and he swatted my hand away. "Probably because of you! You damn near stop my heart every day pulling this shit, woman."

I grinned innocently at the compliment. "Oh, you stopped mine a long time ago, baby."

"You think you're funny? Come here," he growled playfully. My face fell and I turned to run, unable to escape before his hand wrapped around my bicep and he had me trapped in his embrace. I laughed as he kissed my neck aggressively, tickling me with tiny nibbles.

"Draven! Please!" I cackled.

He twirled us around and tossed me on the bed, pinning me under him with a mischievous expression. I admired his matured features, amazed and slightly frightened by the reality of age.

He kissed my forehead with a playful smile. "I win."

"You always win. I want to win once," I pouted, staring up at him with pleading eyes.

He caved in instantly, loosening his hold on my arms. I flipped us over and held him down by his forearms, straddling his hips with a smile. He chuckled at the excitement on my face and I leaned down, pressing a lingering kiss on his lips then pulling back to hover over his face.

"I win," I purred. He continued to smile.

"Yes, you did."

Years Later...

I walked slowly through the grass, unfazed by the downpour as it drenched me from head to toe. A flash of lightening lit the gloomy afternoon sky followed by a massive blast of thunder, yet I remained unbothered and continued my journey.

When I arrived at my destination, I stopped and got down on my knees. My gaze never strayed from the singular red rose flourishing in front of me. It was the only flower in the empty field.

Leaning down, I placed a kiss on the circle of rocks I built around the flower with a quivering lip.

"I win," I whispered weakly.

My body trembled, tears streaming down my face, and my unsteady hands reached for the necklace around my neck. I took it off and stared at it, inhaling shakily as I gently placed it in the circle around the rose.

"Why'd you have to go?" I whimpered, planting my palm on the patchy grass beneath me. "I wasn't ready," I breathed, sucking in a ragged breath with a sniffle.

I thought I understood the concept of forever, but I simply couldn't grasp the permanence of goodbye.

A smile plastered across my face staring at the bedroom. I opened the curtains to show off the blizzard just outside and the several feet of snow piling up against the glass door. The newly finished fireplace lit the inside of the room and I laid snacks out at the foot of the bed with the remote in the center, excitement spiking my heart rate.

I can't wait until he comes home.

Rushing into the bathroom, I neatly hung his towel and turned off the steaming bath water.
