Taekwang opened the door, expecting a quiet evening alone, but when he stepped inside, his heart skipped a beat.
"Eunbi? Ian? And... Eunha?" His voice faltered as he took in the sight of the group sitting in his living room.
He hadn't expected this, especially not Eunha. His eyes instinctively found her on the couch, trying to look calm, but the tension in the room was palpable.
Eunha? Here? Why would she be here? His mind raced as he stared at her, a strange twist in his stomach—a mixture of confusion and something else he wasn't ready to acknowledge.FLASHBACK
"Eunha?"
I looked to my right and saw Eunbi and Ian, all of us confused.
Eunbi looked a little flushed. I would need to ask her about that later.
Taekwang's dad appeared a bit flustered too."Who?" Ian asked, looking puzzled.
"This is Taekwang's dad," Eunha said
"Oh," Ian and Eunbi both said in unison, the realization dawning on them.
Taekwang's dad clapped his hands together, as if trying to minus the non visible awkwaedness. "Have you guys had dinner yet?"BACK TO PRESENT
Taekwang blinked, still standing by the door, unable to shake the confusion.
His stomach churned. Why was she here? More importantly, why did it feel so wrong? His gaze lingered on Eunha, who was clearly trying to act calm but was squirming in discomfort. His chest tightened at the sight of her unease. His father, completely unaware of the tension, smiled at him warmly.
"Taekwang! You're here! I invited everyone over for dinner," he said as though it were no big deal.
Taekwang barely heard him. His focus was on Eunha, who shifted awkwardly on the couch, her posture stiff. She was trying to pretend like she belonged, but Taekwang could see the discomfort written all over her.
"You invited them?" His voice came out sharper than he intended, a mix of frustration and something else—something possessive. He hadn't planned for this, especially not with Eunha. She hadn't been part of the plan.
Eunbi, sensing the tension, gave him a nervous smile. "We didn't mean to surprise you, Taekwang. Your dad just thought it would be nice for everyone to have dinner together."
But Taekwang wasn't listening. His gaze remained fixed on Eunha, who was desperately trying to hide her discomfort behind a thin smile. He could feel it—the distance between them, the way she seemed to want to vanish into the cushions of the couch. She didn't belong here, not in his world, and the realization hit him harder than he expected.
He could feel it—the discomfort in the air was because of him. She didn't want to be here, and that twisted something deep inside him. He wasn't supposed to make her feel this way, but the truth was, he didn't know how to make it right. They all moved to sit down, and Eunha shifted again in her seat. Her hands were twisting the fabric of her sleeves, and Taekwang could see how tense her shoulders were. She looked like she wanted to leave.
"Are you okay?" Taekwang's voice was quieter now, the words slipping out before he could stop them. His throat felt tight.
Eunha glanced at him, her eyes flicking over his face. She wasn't fooling him. "Yeah," she said softly, but her smile was so fragile it broke his heart. "It's just... a lot. I didn't know it was going to be like this."Taekwang's heart clenched at her words. A lot? What did that mean? Was it because of the dinner, or was it because of him? He wasn't sure he could bear knowing the answer, not right now. Before he could say anything else, his father cheerfully interrupted, oblivious to the quiet tension growing around them.
"Let's all sit down for dinner, shall we?"
Eunbi and Ian moved toward the dining table, and Taekwang followed, his mind in a haze. His emotions were a chaotic mess. He wasn't used to this feeling, the one where he was the cause of the awkwardness, the discomfort. The one who couldn't figure out how to act around her anymore. As Eunha sat down beside him, she didn't meet his eyes. Her body was angled slightly away from him, like she was trying to create as much distance as possible without actually getting up. He couldn't blame her. He was just as confused, just as lost as she was. And every time he thought about her, everything inside him turned into a blur of conflicting emotions—confusion, frustration, and something deeper that scared him.
The small talk around the table felt like a distant hum as Taekwang found himself stealing glances at Eunha. She picked at her food, not really eating, her smile thin and her eyes darting around the room, clearly uncomfortable. The more she pulled away, the more his chest ached. He wanted to make her feel better, to ease her discomfort, but the more he tried, the more he realized how complicated things had become between them. It wasn't just her discomfort; it was his. He couldn't figure out how to act around her anymore.
The more he thought about it, the more his chest tightened. He wasn't used to feeling vulnerable, especially not with her. He had kept everything inside for so long—his feelings for her, his confusion—and now, with her sitting next to him, it was like all the walls he'd built around himself were crashing down. It was suffocating.
"Taekwang?" Eunha's voice pulled him out of his thoughts, soft and hesitant.
"Are you alright?" Her words were like a punch to the gut. The realization hit him like a wave—she didn't want to be here because she knew how much he was struggling. It wasn't just the dinner. It was him. He was the reason she was uncomfortable, the reason everything felt wrong.
And that thought only made it worse. Finally, after a few moments of suffocating silence, Taekwang couldn't stand it anymore. The tension in the room was too much, and he could feel it pressing down on both of them. He couldn't let her sit here and suffer because of him, not when he could do something about it. He had to get her out of here.
He turned to Eunha, his voice steady but gentle. "Eunha, let's go. We don't have to stay here. It's... too much, right?"
Eunha blinked, surprised by his sudden suggestion. For a moment, she seemed like she might protest, but then her gaze softened, and she nodded. "But what about everyone else?" Her voice was quiet, almost uncertain.
"I don't care about anyone else right now," Taekwang said quickly, his eyes meeting hers with a quiet intensity. "I don't want you to feel uncomfortable. We can go somewhere else, get some air. I need it too."
Eunha hesitated, clearly processing his words. He could see the relief slowly spreading across her face, the tension starting to ease from her shoulders.
"Okay," she said quietly, a small but genuine smile tugging at her lips. "Let's go."
Without another word, Taekwang stood up and moved toward the door. He held it open for her, briefly glancing back at his father and the others, who were blissfully unaware of the silent conversation between him and Eunha.
As they stepped out of the house together, Taekwang let out a quiet breath. The weight of the night had begun to lift. They didn't need to explain anything to anyone—he just needed to get her out of this situation, away from the discomfort, even if only for a little while.
Itwasn't the perfect solution, but it was a step in the right direction
