I inhaled deeply as I padded into the Pen. Heads swung around, and the wolves parted like a backwards-running wave. I would transform soon. It was nearly midnight.
Tyrone slunk behind me, his head low. Still in an Omega mindset. Not good. I needed a wolf I could trust as Beta. One who did not know the horrors of the Ring. One who had lived outside. I watched the wolves on either side of me as I walked proudly through the path they had made. Upon eye contact with me, they lowered their heads submissively. I held my head high and clambered up onto the slight hill in the very middle of the Pen.
I turned around just in time to see Tyrone scramble up after me and take his position by my right flank. I ran my eyes over the assembled Pack. Most of the Ring wolves were here. I cleared my throat, and all eyes shot to me. Even the pups were on high alert, bodies tense, ears pricked, their tails stiff and straight.
Even my own were there, their sire close behind. I nodded to him, and he returned the gesture.
"We will escape tonight," I say. "This is the Change moon. All Changers, please shift now." The wolves exchanged nervous glances. "Now!" I barked. Almost half the Pack shifted into human-including me. I had figured so, due to the engorged size of the Changer wolves. I nodded. "Good. Now, each Changer, sit on a wolf. I don't care who you sit on, but please try to sit on someone who looks strong enough to carry you." I appraised the pups. "Tyrone."
"Yes, Alpha?" He was speaking the human language. His voice was low and startled me. I turned, and nearly fell backwards.
"Lupus, Tyrone!" I shrieked. "Don't do that!" He cocked his head.
"Why?" He asked quietly. "You told me to Change, so I did." I narrowed my eyes, and jabbed him in the chest. For an Omega, he was built. Like a freaking wall. Lupus, what kind of Omega was that muscular? I felt the sudden urge to jump him. It made me slightly uncomfortable, that I could be attracted to him.
For some reason, it felt wrong.
"You never told me you were a Changer!" I hissed. I had known, but it was common courtesy to tell someone, was it not? He looked sheepish.
"Sorry Alpha," he muttered. "But it never came up." His blue eyes were fixated on the ground beside my left foot. I frowned.
"Look at me." I snapped. Lupus, what was wrong with him now?"
"You're naked, Alpha," I muttered. What did that have to do with anything?
"And?" I asked, crossing my arms. His face went scarlet.
"H-humans never walk around naked," he muttered. "It's an invatation to...mate...with them." Ahh. So that was it. I sighed. Well at least he wasn't taking me up on my supposed invatation then. Although I wouldn't particulaily mind. He was strong, and the wolf in me responded to that strength. Most likely she would enjoy the fight for dominance during mating. She always did.
"Then don't look," I snapped crossly. He nodded rapidly.
"Yes Alpha." He kept his eyes on the ground respectfully. I turned back to the wolves. Both the Changers and the normal ones were watching me intently. Each Changer was seated on the back of a wolf. It looked comical, with a huge, scarred male humans sitting on an equally scarred and large wolf. Or a female human, her body strong and battle-scarred, sat on the back of another battle-scarred wolf. Some female Changers sat on the furry backs of several unimpressed males.
I repressed a giggle. Wolves did not giggle. Human whelps giggled. I cleared my throat again. "Well, time to go. Does anyone need instructions?" They were silent. I smiled. "Good. So we all know how this will work?" Barks and yips and rough, unused human voices called "Yes!"
