The morning rushed by in a whirlwind of activity, and by the time I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the lapels of my black coat, my heart was pounding. Today wasn't just any day. Today, I was stepping back into a world I'd left behind business dealings that required every ounce of my focus. Yet, despite my best efforts, my mind kept wandering to a different kind of worry.
But I couldn't let it show. Not now. Not when I had a job to do.
I slipped into the black dress, the fabric hugging my curves like it was made for me sleek, elegant, and sharp in its simplicity. It had the kind of sophistication that made you feel both powerful and untouchable. A subtle V-neck, the waist cinched with a belt that was just the right amount of polished. The dress fell to just above my ankles with a long slit at the walk to allow me walk properly, the hemline adding to its elegance. My heels clicked sharply against the floor, the sound of my steps both steady and commanding.
I ran my fingers through my freshly curled hair, fixing my bangs, I had a business deal to finalize, and there was no room for distractions. Not today.
As I checked myself in the mirror, I realized how much I'd missed this dressing for the part, for power, for the game. I had always been able to step into this world and own it. Today, though, something was off. The unease in my stomach was more than just nerves.
But I didn't have time to think about it. I had to focus.
I grabbed my purse, making sure everything was in place, and headed toward the door.
Aaron was in the hallway, finishing up with Ace, Aidan and Princess, making sure they were ready to visit Grandpa outside. He looked up as I walked past, his gaze lingering on me with an appreciation that made my heart skip a beat.
"You look stunning, baby," he said, his voice filled with admiration, but there was something more there something protective. His eyes scanned my outfit, then landed on my face, as though looking for something he couldn't quite place.
I forced a smile, keeping my tone casual. "Thanks. Just a little business today."
He nodded but didn't look convinced. "Business? You're not just a lawyer today. You're a storm in that dress."
I felt a rush of warmth flood my cheeks. "Well, I'm hoping to make an impact," I said, trying to deflect the conversation.
what the hell is wrong with me? those are not my usual sharp replies.
act natural mira. Natural.
His eyes softened, but there was still that hint of concern in them. "I know you will. Just don't let them get to you. You're smarter than all of them combined."
I gave him a small nod, knowing he was right. This wasn't the first time I'd had to work with the mafia. It wasn't the first time I'd had to make deals with people who didn't play by the rules. But today, something was off. The nausea that had been building, the dizziness that lingered.
