Waiting for Isolde to leave was more challenging than Kol expected, nearly a whole week he's been here trying to find more answers to save Damon but it always came to a dead end. The ingredients he tried to find were none existent. Isolde's family grimoire had no other information on the spell created by Helga Caldwell. Everything was suspicious and unfortunately for Isolde she was no Mercelline, and Kol has no problem eliminating pesky witches. So when Isolde finally left. Kol didn't hesitate ransacking her little cottage especially that little study of hers that Kol is banned from entering.

"Stupid little witch, thinks she can tell me what to do"

The air in isolde's study was thick with dust and the scent of aged parchment. Kol found some matches, lighting the candelabra in the corner and picking it up slowly walking around the dusty room.

"If only I still had my magic, this would be so much easier."

The room was a relic of the past, filled with forgotten knowledge, the kind of place most would overlook but not him. Not when he was so close to finding out the truth.

The witch he had come to see was long gone, her lineage carried only by distant descendants who barely knew the power running through their veins. But her knowledge remained, trapped within books that had been passed down, hidden away in libraries/studies that only the desperate or the foolish sought out.

Kol was both.

His fingers skimmed over the spines of books, eyes narrowing as he searched for anything-anything-that could give him answers. The spell that witch had murmured to him, the one tied to Damons suffering, had been gnawing at the back of his mind. It was familiar, but he couldn't place why.

Until now.

His hands stilled over a thick, leather-bound tome, its cover cracked with age. The moment he touched it, something in his bones told him he was close. He pulled it free and flipped through the pages, scanning centuries–old incantations until his breath caught.

Two spells. Nearly identical.

One was the very spell the witch had recited to him. A curse meant to slowly drain the life from its victim, rendering them powerless before death. A perfect execution against a strong foe.

What confirms his suspicions of the witch was this spell was nothing like the one she showed him that Helga Caldwell created.

"So I was right! You pesky little witch!"

The second–his eyes darkened as he read–was older, far older than even him, it belonged to a bloodline steeped in war and destruction. Le Rouge.

Kol let out a low whistle.

He had heard of them before. Every Vampire had, probably even the entire supernatural community. Stories whispered about warriors who wielded magic like it was a part of them, men who could tear through entire armies without breaking a sweat. They were feared because they were unstoppable.

And now, Kol knew the truth.

Damon wasn't just suffering from some petty witch's curse. No, this was something much older. Much more personal.

If the spell affecting him was this ancient, this precise—then someone knew exactly who and what he was.

And they wanted him dead.

Kol snapped the book shut, his mind racing. If Klaus and Elijah found out about this, things would spiral fast. The mere mention of Le Rouge was enough to sent even the most ancient vampires into a frenzy.

But Kol wasn't interested in the family history just yet. What he needed to know was why Damon was vulnerable to this spell in the first place.

Because a vampire should have been immune.

Unless...

Kol's smirk faded. No. That was impossible. Damon couldn't be—

His thoughts were interrupted as his phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw a message from Bonnie.

Elena told me something about the powder. Come back to Mystic Falls.

Kol exhaled sharply, tucking the book under his arm. Whatever Bonnie had discovered, it seemed the pieces were finally falling into place.

And for once, he wasn't sure he liked where this was going.
