Damon sat quietly in his armchair, eyes fixed on the fire, sipping bourbon now and then. The crackle of flames was the only sound until a voice broke the silence."What is it, Stefan?" Damon asked, glancing over his shoulder. His brother stood by the front door, brooding as usual. "Elena got an invitation" Stefan said, his tone serious. Damon nodded, unconcerned "I know."
Stefan sighed and stepped forward, holding out a small black box tied with a blue ribbon. "So did you"
Damon raised an eyebrow, setting his drink down as he took the box from Stefan's hand. "Elena didn't get a box. What is it?"
Stefan shrugged "How should I know? I just gave it to you."
Damon ran his fingers over the smooth surface of the box, frowning. "You want me to open it?"
"Why not?" Stefan asked. Damon stood up, his gaze narrowing. "I will. Alone" Without another word, he disappeared upstairs leaving Stefan behind, puzzled.
After a hot shower, Damon wrapped a towel around his waist and stepped into his bedroom, finding the box still waiting on his bed. He sighed, sitting down slowly as he untied the blue ribbon and removed the lid. Inside was an elegant invitation, a black rose and a necklace.
You've been invited to the Mikaelson family ball. Please arrive at 21:00pm. Formal wear required.
Damon ran a hand through his still-damp hair, his expression unreadable. He spotted a smaller envelope beneath the invitation and opened it.
Raven,
We hope you'll join our party. It would be a real shame if you didn't come. Wear something that brings out your beautiful blue eyes, and don't forget that necklace. See you soon.
–EM. NM. KM.Damon frowned, his thoughts churning. He had no idea why the Mikaelson's were so interested in him, especially the brother he had yet to meet. He examined the necklace–a black chain with a striking blue crystal, the letter 'M' engraved into it. Despite its beauty, the gesture felt ominous.
Sighing, Damon put the box away, deciding to deal with it tomorrow. After pulling on some pyjama pants, he slid into bed, unaware of the three pairs of eyes watching him intently from the trees outside.
