You listened to the phone ring and waited to see if Lisa would answer.
It's not that surprising that she wasn't answering your call right away since she's finishing a few things up for her solo album that's coming out soon but you were hoping you'd hear her voice to calm your nerves.
It's nearing one am and you haven't heard from her in hours.
With no indication of her being alright and considering you haven't heard from her in hours, you're concerned about her and want to see if she'll be coming home soon.
You were just about to hang up when you heard her answer.
"Hello?"
"Hey, baby. I was just calling to check on you."
She let out a heavy sigh, almost as if she was frustrated and annoyed, and you couldn't help but wonder if it was because of you or because of how busy she was.
"You don't need to check on me. I'm a big girl."
You frowned before replying.
"I know you are. But I haven't heard from you since this afternoon and it's almost one in the morning."
"That's because I'm busy, Y/N. Okay? I have things to finish up. You think I don't know what time it is?"
"I don't know if you do or not!" You snapped. "Gosh, forgive me for being worried about my girlfriend after not hearing from her for hours and wondering if she was coming home anytime soon."
"Don't be like that." She huffed.
"Like what? You started it by being so crabby with me."
"Whatever." She grumbled.
It was quiet for a moment, the silence between you both on the call creating a heavy discomfort and you wondered who would be the first to break it.
It turned out to be you.
"So?"
"So what?"
"So are you coming home soon?" You asked in annoyance. "Or should I expect to fall asleep in bed by myself tonight? Just like I've been doing lately."
You muttered the last part ever so quietly but Lisa had heard it loud and clear.
"I don't know, Y/N. If you would stop bothering me, I'd be able to get home. The longer you keep me on the phone, the longer I have to stay to finish things up."
"Or maybe you want to stay so you don't have to come home, right?"
It was an absurd assumption, one that you'd never let leave your lips if it weren't for her working herself so hard that it felt like she didn't want to be home sometimes.
Even when she is home, her mind is always wandering and her thoughts tend to stay on work as she thinks about all she still needs to do.
In reality, it's because she's a hard worker and wants to finish everything up soon.
But to you, it feels like she's distracted and spaced out and just wants to work rather than spend time with you.
"That's untrue and I'm hurt that you'd even think such a thing." She said. "You can be such a pain in the neck sometimes. You're constantly nagging me even though I'm working. Can't you see that I'm busy? That I have things to do?"
You went quiet.
"Nagging? That's what you think I'm doing?"
"Yes!" She yelled in frustration.
"I just worry about you!" You shouted.
"Well, stop worrying about me!" She said, rolling her brown eyes, though you couldn't see her doing it. "Just let me work! I'll be home when I get home! Stop bothering me, Y/N!"
"If you feel that way then just don't come home tonight. Stay there, work yourself to the bone. See if I care! I won't call you or bother you anymore." You snapped again.
As she began to tell you that she might just do that, you hung up the phone.
You threw your phone down beside you and she called you back a few seconds later.
You answered before ending the call right away and then turned your ringer off before stomping up the stairs and slamming the bedroom door in anger.
You buried your face in the pillow with a long groan of frustration before you tried to fall asleep.
But you only tossed and turned until she arrived home a little while later and crawled into bed with you.
"Can we talk?"
"No." You angrily answered.
"Fine. I'll talk and you can listen." She said as she clenched her jaw and then took a deep breath. "Look, baby, I didn't mean to snap at you and I didn't mean what I said. I know you worry about me and when I'm working so hard and I don't talk much, you want to check on me. It's sweet of you. You do it because you love me."
"Yeah? Are you sure I don't do it to nag you? Or to be a pain in the neck?"
"I don't know why I said all of that and I'm sorry. I've been so busy that I'm extremely sleep deprived and I just don't feel like myself because of how tired I am. I guess I'm just easily agitated and irritable." She paused, biting her lip. "But I'm not making excuses. I'm sorry for everything."
You turned over to face her and looked to see a look of genuine sorrow and regret in her eyes.
"I'm sorry too." You sighed. "Everything I said, I didn't mean. I'm sorry."
She reached for your hand and held it in hers.
"I hate fighting with you, especially over the phone." You said and watched her eyes sparkle slightly.
"Me too."
She pulled you in for a kiss.
"I'm almost done preparing everything. I only have a little more to do so I need to get it all done but I won't push myself and I won't be staying at work so late. I'll also be texting and calling throughout the day so you know I'm alright."
"That makes me feel a little better. Please know that I don't call or text you a bunch to annoy you or nag you. I do it because I worry about you."
"I know. When I go a while without hearing from you I get worried too."
You brushed your thumb across her palm and the feeling brought a slight tickle but she didn't complain.
"I love you, baby."
"I love you too."
She leaned in and stole another kiss from your lips.
"Ready for bed?"
"In a few. I want to stay awake and talk more for now."
You snuggled up to her and listened to her tell you all about what she was up to and what she had planned and as much as you miss her, you also feel so proud and so excited for what's to come for her.
