Dru POV
I am lying in a tiny twin bed in a grey room. This whole room seems to be composed out of shades of white and black, no color on the walls at all. There is only one window in the room, and it lets in no light. It must be night time. I’m not afraid of the dark, even though I should be.
Bad things happen in the dark.
“What am I going to do?” I hear a deep voice breath, trying to be quiet.
Why would someone be up this late?
“You have to be strong. You have to stay strong for Dru, David. She doesn’t know.” Another quiet voice murmurs, sounding extremely tired. I think it’s a woman.
“I can’t raise a child on my own, Mom. I don’t know what to do. I can’t go on without her.” It is the deep voice again, and it sounds awfully sad, and another emotion.
My young brain comes up with a word i shouldn’t know yet, but somehow do.
Heartbroken. The man sounds heartbroken.
“David, you can’t send yourself on this suicidal mission, even if it is to avenge Alice. You can’t leave your child alone.” the woman’s voice sounds pleading now, desprate.
“Mom, Im not going on a suicide mission. I’m going to find him. I’m going to find that bastard, and rip him apart like he did to so many innocents. Like he did to...to A-lice...” the man has started crying quietly, sounding horribly sad. I don’t want him to be sad.
“Now David, I know this is hard for you, I understand wha-”
The man cuts her of, angrily spitting “You DON’T understand! Don’t try to tell me you ‘understand’!” The man is yelling, now. “The police say they ‘understand’! The doctors say they ‘understand’! The damn detectives even say they ‘understand’ when they were investigating me for my wife’s murder! So DON’T try to tell me that you understand! No one understands! No one knows what it feels like, to run to the crash site, to see a man standing over her broken body, smiling at me with his mouth fucking DRIPPING with her blood! No one understands having to go to court, and lie about how your wife died in a car accident, when all you want to do is scream ‘She didn’t die in a car accident! She was killed by some son-of-a-bitch demon who won’t stop until he’s killed my daughter, too! But then they would drag me off to some crazy bin, where they would put me in a straightjacket, and tell me there were no such things as monsters, wouldn’t they..... So just don’t, don’t tell me that you understand.” The man sits down again, his voice quiet again.
I sit up, unable to ignore the voices in the next room. The volume of the voices are beginning to frighten me. No, Daddy told me to never be scared. Being scared means becoming weak. Weakness means death.
The woman speaks again, on the verge of tears. “What if-What if you don’t come back, David? What do I do then?”
The man sighs, and says, “If I don’t come back, well Mom, taking care of my little girl will be the least of your worries.”
I went to the door, about to open it and ask what they were talking about, and why they were talking about Mommy. I want to see Mommy soon, it’s been so long since i’ve seen her. Whenever I ask, Daddy gets this far-away look in his eyes, and his voice sounds....hollow. He tells me that she’s on vacation. That she’s gone away, and that she’s having a wonderful time, and not to worry. She’ll be back one day.
When I ask when she will be back, he always looks at me with hurt in his eyes, and just says, “Soon, honey. Soon.”
