I always hated Valentine's Day. It was yet another reminder how lonely I usually was. But this year was different. This year, I had my lovely girlfriend by my side. Something I had learned since dating Jenna for 6 months now, was that she was possibly the biggest, private romantic ever.
Our relationship had been gated. We weren't afraid to show the world how much we love each other, but private moments together were so much better. The outside world didn't exist in those moments.
It was just you and the person you loved.
But even if I didn't have a girlfriend the previous years, my friends and I would host Galentine's day parties for each other. Even the ones who were in relationships would come. It was a reminder that this day wasn't just for couples, it was everyone who loved anyone.
When I was a teen, I used to be my mom's valentine and she used to be mine. She is still mine - I texted her early morning and already had a bouquet of flowers being sent to her doorstep.
But when I crawled out of bed and trolled downstairs, Jenna was cooking breakfast for me. It smelled heavily of strawberries, raspberries, and cream.
"What is all this?" I asked, wearing nothing but her shirt and socks.
Jenna turned to me with a grin on her face, a cute Beetlejuice themed apron taking place around her front and neck. "Valentine's day breakfast for my one and only love!"
"You are so cute." I pecked her cheek, sitting in the counter.
Jenna flipped the strawberry pancakes she was making before moving to stand between my legs. Her hands trailed down my thighs to grab them, forcibly wrapping them around her body. I let out a giggle.
"I know you said gifts weren't necessary but it's my love language so I bought you a few. For now, here's your card." Jenna brought up a red, velvet card out from her pocket and handed it to me. She kissed my lips softly before continuing to make breakfast.
I curiously furrowed my brows together. I ripped the card open with my nails, placing the envelope aside. I ran my hands along the hard, paper back card. I quickly opened it, my eyes in taking the glittery words.
My dear Y/N, I'm not good at writing letters but as you know, another love language of mine was words of affirmation. I love to say all the beautiful things about you because there is truly no one more special than my own girlfriend. I suppose you would say this is the inner Wednesday of me that was coming out. You know, since she likes to write and all. Even if she despises love and everything to do with it, I have a feeling that deep down if she met someone like you in the show or her life time, she'd do all the cheesy romantic things with a dead look on her face. My point of that was to say how amazing you are. You're that special and spectacular that you could make anyone with a cold heart feel a little warmer and loved. You light up my world with just a smile or eye contact with those beautiful irises of yours. I'd never wish to lose you, I hope I never do, I can imagine a grand and bright future with you. Your lover forever, or however long forever is, Jenna <3
I couldn't hold the giant grin on my face. "Jen." I groaned happily, covering my face with my hands. "I love you so much."
"You know I love you more." Jenna huffed proudly. "Now come eat, my darling."
The table was decorated with brand new pink tulips in a glass vase, plates of strawberry pancakes with whipped cream and chocolate chips on top, a bowl of raspberries in between the plates, and two small gift boxes right beside where I sit.
"Come on, baby." My girlfriend ushered. She pulled my chair out for me, making me sit down. Jenna sat beside me and eagerly pushed the gifts towards me. "Please open them. I promise it costed no more than $50."
"Fine, fine." I chuckled, inevitably caving in.
Jenna rhythmically tapped her fingers excitedly against the table as I opened the gifts. The first one was a metal heart locket with my favorite picture of us inside. It was the picture of us at the beach, Jenna hugging me from behind while kissing my neck, her eyes staring straight at the camera. I had the biggest grin on my face, holding onto her arms as my hair was blowing in the wind.
"Oh babe." I placed my hand on my chest. "This is so cute." I quickly out the locket on.
"Now the last gift." Jenna pushed it towards me. I opened it, unwrapping the little pink bow on it. I pushed the lid off and took out the tiny envelope inside. I gave Jenna a curious smile before opening that as well.
Inside, were almost 20 tickets. But not lottery tickets, they were the tickets you'd get at carnivals or fairs to win prizes. On the back of each one was something I got the chance to cash in.
One of them said movie of my choice. Another read letting me pick out anything for her to wear.
"Okay, this is really cute too." I laughed, tucking them safely back in the envelope.
"I know right?! I had to pay $5 to get those tickets. There was a giant ass roll of them at Office Depot." Jenna snickered, kissing my cheek. "Now eat before the food gets cold. I didn't burn anything this time."
"Mmm, it's delicious." I moaned. "You're a good cook, baby."
"When I want to be, absolutely." Jenna smiled sweetly at me. She picked up a forkful of pancakes from her plate and shoving it towards my mouth. I took a bite with a satisfied hum leaving my lips.
"I love you." I mumbled, staring into her eyes.
"I love you more, precious."
