The living room was a beautiful mess— blankets half-folded, toys scattered like confetti, and two coffee cups sitting dangerously close to the edge of the table. Sunlight filtered through the curtains in warm strips, falling right over the baby on the floor.
Luna babbled at absolutely nothing, slapping her hands against the hardwood with great enthusiasm. Jenna sat cross-legged nearby, her hair pulled into a loose bun that was seconds from falling apart, a soft, tired smile gracing her face as she watched.
You knelt beside them, rubbing your hands together with the energy and determination of someone who had a plan.
Jenna glanced up at you suspiciously. "Why are you doing that? That's your 'I'm about to be annoying' stance."
"I am not annoying." You said with a dramatic gasp.
"You absolutely are." Jenna shot back, but she was already smiling. "What's the idea now, Y/N?"
You smoothed a hand over Luna's soft hair. "So... I was thinking..."
"Oh boy." Jenna murmured.
"Since Luna just started crawling," You continued, ignoring her, "It is clearly the perfect, most meaningful, most important time in her life."
Jenna blinked. "She's eight months old."
"Exactly. Her formative years."
"Oh my god." She laughed, covering her face with her hands. "What are you plotting?"
You cleared your throat, stood up dramatically, and pointed to the open floor.
"I want to let her pick her Hogwarts house."
Jenna stared. You stared back, unbothered. Luna drooled.
Then Jenna let out a slow exhale. "I married a nerd."
"You did!" You said proudly. "And now our daughter will decide her destiny the way all important people do."
"By... crawling?"
"Yes." You pointed at Luna like she was a knight about to go on a quest. "By crawling."
Jenna shook her head but she couldn't stop smiling—that soft, fond smile she only got when she was looking at you or at Luna. "Okay, okay. Tell me how this works."
You immediately rushed off to the hallway closet, rummaged through the old box of your fandom collectibles. Jenna watched as you triumphantly returned with four things: a scarf for each house represented.
"Did you plan this?" Jenna asked incredulously.
"I plan everything." You said. "Now help me."
You arranged each house item in a row together, evenly spaced apart, like this was about to become a life changing event.
"I feel like this is some form of child manipulation." Jenna teased.
"It's free will." You insisted. "And also destiny."
Luna, blissfully unaware of the life-changing decision ahead of her, smacked her palm against the floor and giggled. Jenna scooped her up and kissed her cheek before placing her gently in the center of the room.
"Okay, Luna." Jenna said in a mock-serious voice. "Choose wisely."
You clasped your hands together like you were watching a world championship.
Luna blinked. Looked at you. Looked at Jenna. Then let out a loud squeal.
"She's ready." You whispered.
Your daughter tilted forward onto her hands, swaying slightly, then began her crawl.
You and Jenna leaned in, holding your breaths like anxious sports fans watching a penalty kick.
Luna crawled... two inches to the left. Then stopped to slap the floor again.
You sighed dramatically. "She's contemplating."
"She's eight months old." Jenna said again, biting back a laugh.
Luna turned, wobbled, then crawled a few more inches, headed straight toward...
"No way." You whispered, eyes widening.
She beelined for the Hufflepuff scarf.
Jenna burst into laughter. "Our daughter's a Hufflepuff?"
"No, no, she's not." You said quickly, pointing at their baby as if she had just committed treason. "Try again, Luna. Sweetheart, Mommy will buy you literally anything in the world if you could just go to Slytherin-"
"Y/N!" Jenna shoved your shoulder playfully.
"What? I'm not bribing her. I'm... encouraging academic excellence."
Luna squealed again, reaching out and flopping straight onto the plush badger. Then she grabbed it, hugged it to her chest, and rolled onto her back with a triumphant grin.
"That's it." Jenna declared proudly. "She's chosen."
You stared, accepting your fate. "A Hufflepuff," you said, putting a hand to your heart. "My daughter... is a Hufflepuff."
Jenna leaned against you, her shoulder brushing yours, her voice soft. "I think it fits her. She's sweet, gentle, patient..."
"She drools." You added.
"She's loyal." Jenna countered, nudging you.
"And food motivated." You said with a sigh. "Just like her mother."
Jenna rolled her eyes. "If you're calling me a Hufflepuff-"
"You absolutely are."
She shoved you again but then laughed, leaning her head on your shoulder.
The room fell into that warm, quiet comfort you loved, the kind that only existed when you and Jenna were home, when Luna was babbling happily, when nothing outside the walls mattered.
You looked down at your wife and softened.
"You're perfect." You murmured.
Jenna's cheeks flushed a little. "You get so sappy when you see her do anything remotely cute."
"She chose a Hogwarts house." You said dramatically. "That's a major life event. It's almost as big as her first steps."
Jenna laughed softly. "You're ridiculous."
"But you love me."
She lifted her head, looked at you, really looked, and her expression melted into something warm and certain.
"I do." She whispered. "More every day."
You swept a stray curl behind her ear, feeling your chest tighten in that wonderful way it always did around her.
"And I love you. And our tiny Hufflepuff."
As if she understood her new title, Luna squealed again and kicked her feet.
Jenna leaned in, kissed your cheek, then rested her forehead on yours.
"For the record," She murmured, "You could've put excluded Hufflepuff if you didn't want her to choose it."
You gasped. "That's cheating!"
"It's strategy." Jenna shot back.
You grinned. "Let's sort her again tomorrow."
Jenna laughed and wrapped her arms around your waist. "We're not turning this into a daily ritual."
"Weekly?"
"No."
"Monthly?"
"Y/N-"
Luna squealed again, hugging the Hufflepuff plush like she was declaring her allegiance to the world.
You sighed dramatically. "Fine. One Hufflepuff in the house. But I'm making her a little cardigan."
Jenna smirked. "Of course you are."
And as the sun warmed the room and Luna babbled happily, Jenna slipped her hand into yours and you knew she was falling even more in love, just like she always did.
