You're not nervous. Nope, not at all.

It's just a different hangout spot, don't overthink it, Y/n.

Y/n(thoughts): This was a mistake... – You sweatdrop nervously as you hold the door open for Poka – What else could I expect from a cafe?

[Earlier – Journalism Clubroom]

The journalism clubroom buzzed with its usual background noise—printer humming, keyboards clacking, the occasional rustle of papers.

Ken was handling research, Aira was drafting articles along with Miki (because Aira is the only one who actually trusts Miki so far), Momo was printing the complete articles while Mariko was overseeing the bigger picture

You pulled Mariko aside, your tone casual but the grip on her sleeve a little too tight to be normal

Y/n: Hey, you know places, right? – You asked, trying to sound natural

Mariko: I… know places? – Mariko gave you a flat look.

Y/n: Y’know, good spots. – You clear your throat – To hang out. With a friend. Specifically a friend who hasn’t hung out with me in a while, and I feel kinda bad about it.

Mariko: You’re asking me for date spots? – Mariko’s eyes gleamed with immediate mischief

Y/n: Not a date. – You deadpanned, despite your newfound hyper-awareness making you question yourself

Mariko: Then why are you so nervous? – She arched an eyebrow, smirking like she's trying not to laugh

You click your tongue once, running a hand through your hair to buy some time to your next line; You knew this was going to happen

Y/n: Look, I just want a good place to chill – You grimace, trying to get your point across – It's been some time I don't hang with Poka so I thought we could go somewhere different, since we only ever go to the park.

Mariko leaned back, arms crossed, thinking. Then, a grin spread across her face.

Mariko: A café.

Y/n: …A what?

Mariko: A café. Good atmosphere, plenty of options, plus… – She smirked – It's very quiet, has many conversation starters...

Y/n: You’re scheming something. – You blinked then narrowed your eyes. – I can feel it.

Mariko: Me? Never. – She put her hands up in protest – But if you don’t do this, then you'll have to find somewhere else.

[Currently - Café]

And that’s how you found yourself here.

The door chime jingles softly as you step inside after Poka, she folds her cane and neatly stores it in her bag, staying in place as if waiting for you

Y/n: Let's go – You glanced at the empty line, when Poka grabs your sleeve – Huh?

Indoors, she usually has someone with her—her mother, most often. But today, that someone is you

You clear your throat, offering your arm wordlessly, and she took it without a second thought.

Y/n(thoughts): Okay. This is fine. This is normal. – You take a few glances around, noticing the other customers are mostly couples – Great. We fit right in, huh?
