A lifetime ago...
When the Earth turns to the moon's domain every creature must give into its sensitivity.
Nestled on the swamp bank was the golden silhouette of a man, transfixed by the absence of his reflection in the muddy water. The ripples refuse to respond to his touch. When he calls no critter answers. Even the eye of the sky dares not to look at him.
On the opposite end, Ala appears drenched in the moonlight's gauzy gaze.
A halo covered her, giving her a crystalline appearance. When she dove into the pool, the water cleared and became a mirror of the sky. Tadpoles swam alongside her, grazing the soft tufts of hair on her head, while her hands delicately parted the water as she swam to his side.
Now that the muddy water had cleared away, he caught the first glimpse of himself. The trick of the light was strong enough to show him the outline of his head and hair, but it was still too weak and distorted the features of his face.
"So many fascinating nighttime creatures. I can see you in front of me but you're absent behind me." She said.
Both excited and startled they both asked,
"Can you hear me?"
"Can you speak?"
But it fell upon deaf ears. His excitement capsized.
"I guess someone without a face doesn't have much to say." She said.
A bird without feathers is one without pride and no means to protect itself. Her words touched his vulnerability, and he pulled away to let them sink like a stone in the river. It was pulled out when she said.
"It must be painful to be a reflection without an original image. But silence is precious for healing."
He was captivated by the way she revealed in the night and took comfort under its blanket of invisibility, how everything conformed to her tranquility, and most of all, by the attraction he felt looking at the serene and warm expression on her face.
A cool wind passed her when he reached out to touch her. The water droplets shone like diamonds as she shivered.
"I guess that is it for the day. Perhaps we will see each other again." She said.
The incandescent path back to Ala's glade was paved by her wet footprints. Shen walked behind her gingerly. Placing his foot over the shape of hers. When they reached the base of her tree she laid in a bed of flowers that had grown to accommodate the imprint of her body.
"The ghost doesn't need a face. He has beautiful hair."
A blush bloomed across his cheeks. That is when he noticed the way the wet clothes clung to the shape of her body.
The air between them shifted. A warm current emanated from his hand. It removed the dampness from her clothes and wrapped around her like a blanket. He settled next to her and watched the gentle rise of her breath.
