The moment was broken by the presence of a thousand eyes. Whirring and clicking its way down the starlight, a wheel with a wheel made its way. Contained in each wheel was a row of eyes. Fixed in the center was the largest one. An ophanim, heaven's messenger.

A chill went down Shen's spine, and he made himself small enough to hide in Ala's aura. With each click Ala's arousal turned to irritation.

She could not look at it. For if she searched for sentience, there would be nothing. The ophanim was nothing more than an obedient dog. Constantly waiting for a command, it hung on to her very breath. Something so invested in her life gave her no room to live.

But the ophanim was insistent on getting her attention. It got closer and spun its wheels faster. Tangling up her clothes and hair. A circle within a circle, circling around making her dizzy. A high-pitched ringing echoed through one ear and out the other.

A moment of silence was a prelude to the sound of the divine horn. The ophanim had become motionless. Each eye was glazed over and covered by a milky white film. She saw herself reflected in the center eye. Ala could feel another posing will over her own. It conquered her hands and feet. Embedded itself in her nerves. Became the center of her gravity and left her rooted in place.

An image took over her vision.

On the flat plain beyond the perception of anyone was a paradise of flowers.

Affection rose with the stars and filled the night. Green stems were newly awakened under the twilight. Roses bloomed alongside the daffodils dancing. A calm and clear sky nurtured them. Fireflies danced around like candles. Crickets chirped a quiet birthday song. Ala, nestled in the grass was cradled in its warm embrace. It had never forgotten her imprint. No matter how long she had been away, the impression of her remained.

She allowed herself to give in to the moment. Regardless of what chaos surrounded, this place was always sheltered from danger.

Still, an anxious thud budded in her chest.

Two great silver wings came into view and blocked the stars.

"Happy birthday."

The glade, sensitive to her moods responded. A thorned vine started to slither through the grass.

"Shouldn't you also be thanking me, The Blessed Angel?"

A swarm of wasps steadily made its way towards his head.

"You are quite ungrateful. If it wasn't for my kind and divine nature you would not have this sacred space to retreat to." He said.

A scorpion had crawled on his back and aimed its stinger at the base of his spine.

Anger settled like stone in Ala's body. Everything was poised to attack. In his presence she couldn't fake it. For she could see the image of herself through his eyes. A pile of broken and brittle bones fused together with shame. Unworthy of life, she so desperately wished it was taken.

Despite the faded edge of her vision reminding her it was not real, she allowed herself to be convinced. The scorpion retreated into the ground, the wasps flew away and the vine returned to the trees. She could not bear to look at him. For he would see the truth in her eye. So, she turned away and let herself be cast in his shadow.

But Shen who lingered on her back was accustomed to seeing through shadows and saw the black mist.

The last of her will about to dissipate, but Shen supported it on his own. He stoked the hate bubbling in her gut.
