"Séances are dangerous sweetness."
"I'm aware."
Erix floated around the circle of candles and symbols as Wednesday sat in front of it. She was attempting to summon Goody, one of the first outcasts and her great great great grand-something.
"So why is this so important?"
"She showed up a few times before. She said that I had an important task to complete. I need a less vague answer."
"Ah." He stopped in front of her.
"Why do you have wings?" She looked at the inky black skin. "I've only seen you use them once."
"Flying and hovering are different. Most demons with wings don't use them really."
He wasn't in his full incubus form; he had his horns, wings, and tail out and his eyes were pink as he floated in front of her but he wasn't his natural height and he stayed pale. His hair didn't have the white in it either.
"Since you're here, could you be useful and light the candles?"
"Are you prepared for a demon to appear instead of your ancestor?"
"Of course. I have you after all."
Erix grinned and snapped his fingers, instantly lighting every candle in the pentagram.
"Tell me more."
"About what?"
"Demons of course."
"Is this your roundabout way of saying you wanna know more about me?"
"Is that what I asked?"
He laughed lightly. "No, of course not. Well what do you want to know?"
"The book said that succubi and incubi must feast on flesh to keep their power."
"Myth. Hellborn succubi don't need humans to keep their powers, neither do sinners."
"Where do you fall in hell's hierarchy?"
"Well.. you must understand that hell is an entirely different place, especially compared to what humans think." She didn't reply but Erix knew that meant he could continue. "Despite the low status of hellborns and succubi, I am still technically a prince. I am, reasonably, one of the most feared demons in hell."
"I can't imagine you scaring anyone."
"Oh dear, that's because you haven't given me any reason to do anything. Any other questions?"
"Your tail. Do you have control of it?"
"For the most part, yes. It's also a bit of a subconscious thing. Like, some random movements aren't me really doing anything. Not all demons have tails as opposed to what we're depicted as."
"And your wings?"
As usual when she saw them his wings were sort of folded making them look smaller than they were.
"They're for longer distances or simply protection. My mom has wings but can't fly. However, if need be, she can use them to protect herself. They're better than a bulletproof vest."
"Like a shield."
"Yep. Different demons have different features. The lower demons have less power."
"And you?"
"Succubi and incubi are basically the second lowest, which is why the ones that have wings can't really fly. Our other powers make up for that though. I can fly because my father is an embodied sin and thus a king."
"You're a hellborn."
"Uh-huh."
"Does that mean you can't die?"
"Only an angel can kill me and even then they'd have a really hard time doing it. They're faster but I'm stronger."
"Would your wings be able to protect you from them?"
"An angel? Depending on the weapon and who's wielding it they could vaporize my wings in a second. I don't have to worry about that stuff though."
"It would be a shame to rid you of these. They must be useful," she said, looking at them. She wondered how big they really were.
"You could touch them if you want. I don't mind."
"Really?"
"Mhm." He sat on the floor next to her and extended one of his wings.
They were like a dragon's, black with shimmering scales, but they didn't feel rough. She noticed him shiver slightly as she inspected them, careful not to hurt him in any way. She was unsure how she didn't notice but there were white spike like horns on the ends.
"Can demons be injured?"
"Technically yes. Only by specific things."
"Sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt your..." Enid trailed off when she fully took in the sight of them. "Uh, do I even want to know?"
Wednesday placed her hands back at her sides. "I was reaching into the black maw of death to contact a relative."
"Feels very on-brand for you. You have a relative named Goody?"
"She was one of the original outcasts. Been attempting to summon her, but she seems to be ignoring my entreaties."
"Oh, you thought about using one of my scented candles? The aroma of steak tartare is to die for." A knock came at the door and Enid answered it. A letter was on the floor. "Maybe Goody answered you after all."
"I doubt she communicates in magazine cutouts."
