"This is where he said they would be" Karma pants, as we both see the opening to the alleyway that Nagisa called us from.
Sweat dampens the nape of my neck, curling my hair, having run all the way from Nishiki Market after hearing Nagisa's frantic phone call telling us the girls had somehow been taken by some thug senior kids.
"Karma!" I hear Nagisa's voice, shrill with panic as we come to a stop in front of him.
"Where were you guys?!" Sugino rounds on us, his elbow raw in places like he recently fell "we didn't even realise you weren't with us until we were getting jumped by those idiots!"
"Which way did they drive?" I ask, having caught my breath. Sugino is too busy pacing so Nagisa answers for both of them.
"We're not sure, it was hard to tell. They got Sugino good and I looked back to see him and by the time I turned back around they were gone" Nagisa says, his voice starting to lose the tremble of adrenaline.
"Okay, why don't we split up? I know they're in a vehicle, but they can't have gone too far with them in the time allowed. If we each pick a street direction we can cover more ground" I suggest, already itching to get moving.
"And how would we know where to look, oh wise and all knowing Agent?" Karma interrupts "Didn't you say you'd never been here before? Unless you've memorised the geographical layout of Kyoto in the time we've been here, I'd say your plan is flawed"
"I don't think we should split up like that" Nagisa interjects before I can reply "it already says in the tour guide that we shouldn't and we could be putting ourselves in more danger. We should Figure this out together"
"Not all of us can work well as a team" Karma says aloud with a brief glance in my direction and if these were different circumstances I would retaliate but Sugino speaks before I can make a bad decision.
"We'll be too slow as a large group too" He argues, walking with impatient steps "Maybe we should just call Karasuma and Koro-sensei?"
"We're already losing time without waiting to relay all this information to another two people" I explain "and that car is getting further away the longer we sit here talking about it. So you either make a decision or I'm heading off without you"
"How about a compromise then?" Suddenly there is a weight on my shoulder and i turn my head to see Karma's elbow propped up on me "Me and our friendly neighbourhood agent will go one way and Nagisa and Sugino go another. If any of us find anything we'll text a location"
"That's still risky—"
"Done. Let's go before they get any further away" I cut off Nagisa's protests and start marching Down the nearest downhill street.
My mind is buzzing with thoughts, one internal dialogue leading into the next quicker than I can form a solid plan...but the loudest thought of all is one that makes me feel cold inside. Could this be something to do with Sakurai? It seems a haunting coincidence to learn that Asaoka has people watching me for a over a year, and after learning what I've learnt about this assignment and it's false promises, I somehow find one of those people here? And less than an hour later — my class mates go missing.
This is your fault.
The words stick inside my head, like they have teeth, sinking into my conscience and squeezing out a cold feeling of guilt.
I always work alone, I told Tadaomi this was a bad idea, all of it, and now students are missing just because of me...
"Were you planning on waiting for me?" I am drawn backwards by a hand on the back of my collar, and Karma appears next to me, panting lightly.
