Lacock, February 14, 1905

The laughter of children filled the kitchen of the small family home. A blond man was standing in the kitchen, preparing dinner with the help of his two daughters. "Mummy will be amazed," the seven-year-old squealed excitedly. Her brunette pigtails bounced up and down as she did a little dance of joy. "I'm sure of it, Aurelia," her father agreed, smiling gently. "And especially because her two angels cooked for her." "And you, Papa," his nine-year-old daughter reminded him. She had inherited her father's blond hair, but her eyes were as brown as her mother's.

"Hey, what about me? Am I not helping?" the tall brunette man, who was gutting the fish, exclaimed. "You count for Papa, Uncle Sebbo." The older daughter caught a shocked look from her uncle. "You're lucky that I love you so much, Holly. I would have tied a knot in anyone else's tongue for using that nickname." "I guess you'll never get rid of that name, Sebbo," his best friend teased him, only to have the wet dishwashing sponge thrown in his face shortly afterwards. "You're lucky I'm helping you, Ominis. If your cooking skills are as terrible as your potions, I'm surprised Poppy still lets you cook." "Normally, Dad isn't allowed to cook either," chirped Holly, prompting a loud laugh from her uncle. Ominis put the sponge aside and continued carefully chopping the vegetables. "But today, we want to surprise Mom. It's our anniversary, after all," he explained. "You can put a blindfold on and then try to cook, Sebastian. You probably wouldn't even be able to make a sandwich." "Does Poppy have to spread it for you, too, or can you do it yourself?" Sebastian continued to tease his best friend. "Very funny. I even manage to put a slice of cheese on it," Ominis countered. Sebastian just laughed quietly.

"Is it true that you brought Mom and Dad together, Uncle Sebbo?" Holly asked a little later. Sebastian couldn't help but grin. "You could say so. Your dad has been my best friend since our first year at Hogwarts, and your mom quickly became Charlotte's best friend when she joined us in our fifth year." "Charlotte like in Aunt Charlotte?" Aurelia asked. "Exactly," Sebastian confirmed and continued.

"Charlotte and I fell in love in our fifth year, and your father, Charlotte, and I spent a lot of time together. A year later, Charlotte and I became a couple, and our circles of friends merged over time." "I was your only friend, Sebastian," Ominis reminded him. Sebastian gasped in horror. "At least act like I'm cool in front of your children. Anyway! Your father and I didn't have much to do with your mom before, apart from having a few school subjects with her. Well, and when Charlotte and I became a couple, your parents got to know each other better. Charlotte and I immediately sensed that the two of them belonged together and decided to play a little cupid together. For example, we often met for double dates without them knowing that it was a double date." Sebastian laughed at the memory, and Ominis grinned quietly. "I will never forget when you agreed to meet us and then forgot our date," Ominis added. "Hey, you spent the day together anyway. Now look what happened!" Sebastian defended himself. Ominis nodded in agreement. "In retrospect, I am infinitely grateful to you. That was perhaps the push that Poppy and I needed. After that, we met more often, just the two of us," he added, addressing his daughters. "At the beginning, it was just friendly." "And when did you realize that you loved Mom?" asked Holly. Ominis thought for a moment. "I noticed early on that your mother is a very special person. The first butterflies in my stomach were when she told me about the beasts she had observed and described them to me in as much detail as possible. And when I witnessed her protecting a Puffskein from a mean classmate who had mistreated the poor creature a few months later, I was hooked. I knew I wanted to marry her and start a family with her one day."

"Poppy has always had a thing for special creatures," Sebastian grinned. "Basically, you were just a wounded animal too." Ominis snorted. "That's true in a way. She always sees behind the facade and can see something beautiful and good in every creature. We spent almost every day together," Ominis continued. "And then Valentine's Day came in our last year at Hogwarts." "Did you finally give Mom a kiss?" Aurelia asked excitedly. Ominis blushed. "No. In fact, your mother was the brave one of us, as she often is. She invited me for a walk in the snow after class and then confessed her feelings to me."

"And then you kissed her?" asked Holly. Ominis grinned in the direction of his older daughter. "Now, don't be so impatient. Your mother caught me completely off guard, and I didn't know what to say. When I was just acting like a complete idiot-" "Which you are," Sebastian interjected. Ominis studiously ignored his friend's comment. "When I was just stammering and probably burning with shame, your mother took the plunge and kissed me. And since then, we've celebrated our anniversary on Valentine's Day every year." "You're welcome," grinned Sebastian. Ominis' smile widened. "I really should thank you. Without your stubbornness and crushes on Charlotte, which I had to listen to day and night for a year and a half, Poppy and I probably wouldn't be married today. And you two wouldn't be here either," he said to his daughters.

"And we probably wouldn't have a delicious meal today," a woman's voice rang out from the hallway. "Mom!" The two girls ran towards their mother with outstretched arms and hugged her in greeting. "We helped Papa and Uncle Sebbo cook," Aurelia explained excitedly. "I even got to fry the fish," Holly added. "And you two have really helped us out." Sebastian walked past Poppy to give his wife a kiss. Ominis greeted Poppy with a kiss as well. "Happy anniversary, honey. If I'm not mistaken, dinner should be ready any minute. Why don't you sit down? We'll serve you today."

The two women sat down at the cosy kitchen table, which was just big enough for them, and Sebastian poured them a glass of wine each. Shortly afterwards, Holly and Aurelia brought the filled plates. The four of them had cooked a real feast. There was tagliatelle with vegetables and seafood in a creamy sauce—the dish from Poppy and Ominis' first official date. And it tasted even better than it did then—probably because of the extra portion of love.
