Yang Shan lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. His chest felt heavy with frustration, but exhaustion slowly crept in. The weight of everything-his forced engagement , his stolen apartment, his father's decisions-left him feeling drained.
After a while, hunger nagged at his stomach, but his pride refused to let him leave the room. I won't give Gu Lang the satisfaction of seeing me come downstairs like nothing happened.
Just as he was contemplating whether he could survive the night without food, a knock came at the door.
"I said I wanted to be alone," Yang called out, not bothering to get up.
But instead of a response, the door creaked open slightly, and a maid stepped inside, carrying a tray of food. She hesitated at the threshold. "Young Master, Master Gu asked me to bring this to you."
Yang frowned. "I didn't ask for it."
The maid bowed slightly. "Master Gu said you might be too stubborn to come down but that you still needed to eat."
Yang sat up, surprised. So he knew? He stared at the neatly arranged dishes-his favorite sweet and sour pork, a bowl of steaming rice, and a side of stir-fried vegetables. It smelled amazing.
He hesitated for a long moment before sighing and gesturing for the maid to place it on the table. "Fine. Leave it there."
She nodded and quietly exited the room, closing the door behind her.
Yang picked up the chopsticks and took a bite. The moment the flavors hit his tongue, he realized-this wasn't made by the mansion's chefs. It tasted different. More personal.
Did Gu Lang... make this himself?
The thought sent a strange, unfamiliar feeling through his chest. He quickly shook it off, focusing on his food instead.
As he ate, he couldn't help but glance toward the door, wondering if Gu Lang was on the other side, waiting to hear his reaction.
But the hallway remained silent.
After finishing his meal, Yang Shan sat back in his chair, staring at the empty plate. He hated to admit it, but the food had been good-too good. If Gu Lang had really made it, then that meant... he had taken the time to think about Yang's feelings.
That's ridiculous, Yang thought, shaking his head. He probably just didn't want me fainting from hunger and causing trouble.
Still, the thought lingered.
He stood up and stretched, his body feeling less tense after eating. His gaze flickered to the door, and after a moment of hesitation, he walked over and cracked it open. The hallway was dimly lit, empty. Gu Lang wasn't there.
Yang stepped out, padding quietly down the hall. He had no idea why he was looking for Gu Lang, but before he could figure it out, he heard voices coming from the living room downstairs.
Curious, he made his way down and stopped just outside the entrance.
Inside, Gu Lang sat on the couch, speaking with an older woman-one of the senior maids.
"Master Gu, the young master finished his meal," she reported.
Yang stiffened.
Gu Lang, who had been flipping through a book, didn't look up. "Did he complain about it?"
"No," the maid said with a small smile. "He ate everything."
A faint chuckle escaped Gu Lang's lips. "Good. He's too stubborn for his own good. He is like a mad dog when he is hungry but never shows ." The maid smiled hearing this.
Yang's face heated. So he really did make it himself but how did he know that i become hangry when my stomach is empty . Such a creep.
Before he could think of an excuse for eavesdropping, Gu Lang suddenly spoke again. "Let him adjust at his own pace. He's not ready to accept this engagement yet, and I won't force him."
Yang's breath caught.
For some reason, hearing those words made his heart feel... complicated.
Silently, he turned around and went back to his room, shutting the door behind him. He lay down on his bed, staring at the ceiling once again.
For the first time since arriving at Gu Mansion, his frustration didn't feel as heavy. Instead, a strange warmth settled in his chest.
