Chapter one: Breaking the Rules [1]

It was another typical Friday at school in the cafeteria. I was talking to my two best friends, Bridgit and Ashley, about boys and gossip when Bridgit suddenly brought something up. “When did you say your mom was coming back?” Bridgit asked me, her eyebrows furrowing together.

Ashley and Bridgit stared at me uncomfortably and I made a weird noise. “Sorry,” they say in unison, looking in another direction.

“She’s coming back tomorrow,” I say. “I wish she was gone longer, though.”

“What?” Ashley asks in a high-pitched voice. It made me cringe and she apologized again. “It feels like it was only a week,” she says and I must admit... Two months seems like a lot when you think about it, but it’s really not. Especially when you’re spending those two months having fun.

“Guys, it’s been two months. Don't you think that’s long enough?” Bridgit asks us, closing her Hello Kitty lunch box. ”Yeah...” Ashley says slowly, nodding her head, in a happier tone. ”Look at the brighter side, Sophia. She still has that business trip in May!” She exclaims, nodding furiously. “Then she’s gone until school is over, which is in late June!”

“Way to state the obvious, idiot.” Bridgit mutters, poking Ashley in the ribs. “Ow!” Ashley yells, which makes the whole cafeteria fall silent and stare at us. “Stop! Stop! Stop!” Ashley says in a low voice to Bridgit. Bridgit didn't listen though.

Bridgit stops for a few seconds then she starts again. She realizes that it’s silent, so she stops again and looks around the cafeteria and sees that everyone is looking at us. “Oh, that’s why,” she says in a low voice.

She puts her hands to her sides and glares at our classmates who were staring at us.

“Beat it!” she yells out; most of them screamed silently and the rest slowly turned around and started mumbling to their friends. Bridgit was really intimidating, believe it or not.

“Stupid pig.” Ashley says and she then started mumbling about Minecraft and Joey Graceffa, which are two things I really like.

“Okay, so since your mom’s coming back tomorrow, how about we have a little get together tonight?” Bridgit asks me, ignoring Ashley’s stupidity. ”Little?” Ashley scoffs.

“We're not having a 'little get together', we're having a BIG get together.” Ashley says.

“How many people do you think we should invite?” Bridgit asks, scratching the back of her neck. “The students we have English with?”

Ashley laughs aloud. “Hell no! I was thinking more like, the whole school?” she asks, raising her eyebrows. “No.” I say, raising my eyebrows.

“No, no, no, no, no, no!” I say. “Why don't we plan this get together at your place?” I ask her, chewing on a S'mores granola bar.

“Because my parents are home and they probably wouldn't approve of me giving alcohol to teenagers that are underage,” she says as if she'd planned this before. “Come on, don't you think the whole school is a bit too much, Ashley?” Bridgit says, deciding to pop into the conversation.

“Thank you.” I say dramatically, looking at Bridgit. “For what?” She asks in a weird voice.

        “For being on my side.” I smile and Ashley rolls her eyes. “The whole school because... Because... Y.O.L.O.!” she yells out and it makes Bridgit laugh.

I stared at her oddly.

Y.O.L.O. was a disgusting acronym to me. Before this “Y.O.L.O.” existed, did people think they lived twice? For sure everybody knew they lived once... This Y.O.L.O. crap is making everybody do stupid things, but since you're only living once, shouldn't you live it without doing stupid crap and doing something that’s the opposite? Something that could change lives and not end yours? Something you won’t regret in the future?

After Bridgit and Ashley were arguing about how many people to invite, I gave in. “Alright,” I say. “The whole school it is.”

“Seriously?” Bridgit asks. “Yeah, seriously?” Ashley asks, scrunching up her nose and furrowing her eyebrows.

“Yeah. I mean, you only live once, right?” I say, smiling at them both.
