"I'm going," I stated, my voice firm, adrenaline surging. But Dr. Lin stood in my path, her eyes calm yet unyielding. "You are not in a state to lead," she said, her voice soft but authoritative. "Your judgment is clouded."
"They need me!" I retorted, frustration boiling. "I won't let them down."
Valerie stepped forward, her expression a mix of concern and determination. "We need clear heads, Jiaxing," she said, her voice gentle but firm. "We need a plan, not a reckless charge."
I felt a wave of anger, then a cold sense of isolation. "Fine," I muttered, turning away. "Do what you want."
Dr. Lin led me to a quiet observation room, the screens dim. "It is time you understood," she said, her voice soft but resolute. "Your past is not a burden, but a key."
She began to recount my childhood, details I had buried deep. Flashbacks flickered across my mind: a cramped apartment, a single parent struggling to make ends meet, the constant pressure to excel. "The 'Pisces Legacy' amplifies everything," she explained, her voice low. "Your strengths, your weaknesses, your fears. It is a powerful gift, but it requires control." She described the dangers of letting my emotions dictate my actions, the risk of becoming a weapon rather than a protector. "You are not your past, Jiaxing," she said, her eyes filled with a deep wisdom. "But you must understand it to move forward."
Through the reinforced glass, I watched Valerie take command. Her movements were precise, her voice calm and authoritative as she coordinated the rescue mission. "Clynston, pinpoint their exact location," she instructed. "Charmaine, Ryan, decrypt any comms from the facility. We need to know what they're facing." A pang of guilt hit me. I should be the one giving those orders. She sent a small drone to try and get a visual of the location.
Jane approached Valerie and Dr. Lin, her expression thoughtful. "I've been trying to understand Jiaxing's state," she said, her voice soft. "His mind is a battleground of conflicting emotions." "He's trapped in a cycle of fear and guilt," she explained. "He's afraid of failing, of repeating past mistakes. He needs to confront these demons, but he's pushing them away." "I could create a construct," she suggested, her voice hesitant. "A virtual space where he can face his fears, in a controlled environment."
I retreated to my quarters, the weight of Dr. Lin's revelations pressing down on me. The darkness felt comforting, a refuge from the chaos. Memories flooded my mind: the sting of failure, the weight of expectations, the fear of inadequacy. I felt like a child again, small and vulnerable. *Am I strong enough?* I thought, the question echoing in my mind. *Can I truly protect them?*
Valerie's team located Silva's team; they were trapped in a hidden underground facility, a maze of concrete and steel. "They're heavily guarded," Clynston reported, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Security systems are locked down." "We need a plan," Valerie said, her voice firm. "We need to get them out, and fast."
I closed my eyes, the darkness behind my eyelids mirroring the turmoil within. I saw my younger self, small and afraid. I saw the faces of those I had failed, the moments of weakness, the times I had let my fears control me. *I am not that child anymore,* I thought, a flicker of defiance igniting within me. *I am stronger. I am more.*
My personal comms chimed, a message flashing across the screen. It was encrypted, addressed only to me. "They know your weakness," it read, the words sending a chill down my spine. "They are coming for you." *Who are "they"?* I wondered, my heart pounding. *And what weakness do they speak of?* I went to the command center, my face grim. "We have a problem," I said, showing the message to the team.
