The digital security simulation flickered on the recruits' Chronos, a complex maze of encrypted pathways. I watched as they struggled, their attempts clumsy and predictable. "Remember," I said, my voice low, "security isn't just about code. It's about understanding the mind behind it."
"He'd use backdoors," Jade's voice cut in, sharp and precise. "Like this." She demonstrated a bypass, a move I recognized from... somewhere. A memory, fragmented and cold, flickered at the edge of my consciousness – a dark room, a network of hidden servers.
Kaelen stood at the back of the room, his expression unreadable. His presence was a constant, subtle tension, a question mark hanging in the air. I had tried to analyze him, but he was a puzzle I couldn't solve.
Ryan and Charmaine's screens glowed with data streams, their investigation into the server farm intensifying. "We've found something," Ryan announced, his voice tight. "Encrypted communications... and they mention 'Dragon.'"
A collective gasp filled the room. Every head snapped up, eyes wide with surprise. "Dragon?" Valerie asked, her voice laced with disbelief. "That's... that's impossible."
"It's definitely his signature," Charmaine confirmed, her fingers flying across the keyboard, the rhythmic click-clack a counterpoint to the growing tension. "Encrypted protocols we recognize, voice-print analysis..."
"But he's our friend," Aloysius said, his voice laced with confusion, his construct form flickering slightly. "Why would he be involved in this?"
"That doesn't make sense," I echoed, a wave of unease washing over me. "Dragon wouldn't do this."
"Maybe it does," Jade said, her eyes narrowed, her gaze fixed on Kaelen. "Maybe someone's been lying to us."
"What are you implying?" Kaelen's voice was low, but there was an edge to it.
"You know something," Jade accused, stepping closer, her posture tense. "Something about 'Dragon.'"
"I know nothing," Kaelen retorted, his gaze unwavering, but a flicker of something, fear perhaps, danced in his eyes.
"Don't lie to us," I said, stepping between them, my voice firm. "We need to know where 'Dragon' is."
"I can't," Kaelen said, his voice strained, a hint of desperation creeping in. "It's... complicated."
"Complicated how?" Jade pressed, her voice laced with suspicion, her past resentment fueling her accusations.
"I can't risk his safety," Kaelen said, his eyes flashing, a raw protectiveness in his tone. "You don't understand the danger he's in."
"What danger?" I asked, my voice low, trying to read the truth in his eyes.
"I can't say," Kaelen said, his voice filled with a desperate plea. "Please, just trust me."
"Trust you?" Jade scoffed, her voice laced with bitterness. "After everything?"
"Jade," I said, trying to diffuse the situation, my hand lightly touching her arm. "We need to focus. We have a mission."
"He's hiding something," Jade insisted, her gaze never leaving Kaelen, her body radiating suspicion.
"We all have secrets," Kaelen said, his voice barely a whisper, a hint of sadness in his tone.
My Chrono pinged, a cryptic message flashing across the screen: *Trust no one. They are watching. They know of the transport crisis.*
"What was that?" Ryan asked, his eyes wide, his fingers hovering over his keyboard.
I stared at the message, a sense of dread washing over me, the words echoing the paranoia that had been growing within me. "I don't know," I said, my voice low. "But I think we're running out of time."
