The city lights, blurred by a haze of anxiety, reflected in my balcony window, mirroring the swirling thoughts in my head. The silence, punctuated only by the distant wail of sirens, felt heavy, a stark contrast to the chaos we were fighting. I found myself drifting back, to the days when Dr. Lin's stories were more magic than medicine, to the nights we spent under the stars. And even further back, to the day I met Valerie and Jane...
(Flashback: A schoolyard. JX, a young, timid boy, is cornered by a group of bullies. They taunt him about his "weird eyes" and his "freakish luck." Just as things are about to escalate, Valerie steps in, her voice sharp and authoritative. "Leave him alone!" she commands. Jane stands beside her, her expression resolute. The bullies, taken aback, disperse. Valerie turns to JX, her eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?" she asks. JX nods, his voice barely a whisper. "Thank you." Valerie smiles, and extends her hand. "I'm Valerie." Jane follows suit. "I'm Jane. We're friends now.")
(Flashback: Later, JX, Valerie, and Jane sit under a large tree, gazing at the clouds. "They look like dragons," Jane says, pointing to a particularly fluffy cloud. "Or maybe spaceships," Valerie adds, her eyes sparkling. JX, hesitant at first, starts to share his own imaginative visions, his voice gaining confidence. He tells them about the strange things he can sometimes see, the flashes of light, the whispers in his head. Valerie and Jane listen intently, their expressions filled with curiosity and acceptance.)
(Flashback: Years later, JX and Valerie are at a conference. They bump into each other, spilling coffee. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" JX stammers, flustered. Valerie laughs, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "No worries," she says. "It happens to the best of us." They spend the rest of the day talking, discovering a shared passion for the impossible.)
(Scene transition: Valerie, in the US, smiles at a memory. JX, trying to impress her with a ridiculously elaborate magic trick, ends up setting a tablecloth on fire. "You were such a dork," she murmurs, shaking her head fondly. But it was his dorkiness, his passion, his unwavering belief in the extraordinary, that had captured her heart.)
(Scene transition: Jane, in the US, meticulously shades a drawing of a winged serpent. "Imagination is a bridge," she says to herself, echoing Dr. Lin's words. "It can take you anywhere." She pauses, her gaze shifting to the window. "I wonder if she knew…")
(Scene transition: JX's phone rings. It's Valerie.)
"Hey," I say, a smile creeping onto my face. "How are you holding up?"
"As good as I can be," Valerie replies, her voice a little shaky. "Just… thinking. About Dr. Lin. About when we were kids. And about… us."
"Us?" I echo, my heart skipping a beat.
"Yeah," Valerie says softly. "Our first day. The schoolyard. The bullies. The coffee. The tablecloth."
I laugh, the sound a welcome release of tension. "Oh god, the tablecloth. I thought you were going to kill me."
"I almost did," Valerie says, her voice playful. "But then… you looked at me with those big, sincere eyes, and I just… melted."
"And the rest, as they say, is history," I say, a warmth spreading through me.
"It wasn't easy, though," Valerie says, her voice turning serious. "Winning you over. You were so focused on your work, on the Pisces legacy."
"I know," I say, a hint of regret in my voice. "But you were patient. You understood. You saw something in me, something I didn't even see in myself."
"And you," Valerie says, "you brought the magic. You showed me that the impossible was possible. You made me believe."
We fall silent for a moment, the weight of our shared history settling between us.
"JX," Valerie says, her voice gaining strength. "Do you really think we can do this? Fight a virus with… with imagination?"
"I don't know, babe," I say, honestly. "But what other choice do we have? We've tried everything else. Maybe… maybe she's right. Maybe we need to try something different. Something… imaginative."
"She always said we had the power within us," Valerie says, her voice filled with a newfound determination. "That we just needed to believe."
"Then let's believe," I say, my voice firm. "Let's believe in the stars, in imagination, in each other. We're in this together, right?"
"Always," Valerie replies, a warmth spreading through her voice. "Always, babe."
We talk for a while longer, about Dr. Lin's instructions, about the visualization exercises, about the dream weaving. We share our fears, our hopes, our memories. And as we talk, I feel a sense of connection, a bond that stretches across continents, across time. We're not just fighting a virus; we're fighting for our future, for our past, for everything we believe in. And we're doing it together, just like we always have.
(The call ends. JX looks out at the city, a renewed sense of purpose filling him. He knows the road ahead will be difficult, but he also knows that he's not alone. He has Valerie, he has his team, and he has the power of imagination. And that, he believes, is enough.)
